We Wish You A Larry Christmas |
1998
|
We Wish You A Larry Christmas was a bootleg created by Joel Pierce. After Joel died, Larry recorded one of his songs, Friendship's End and released this bootleg himself. Note that Larry had no involvement at all in the tracks Turnin' Me In and Ulla. Presumably Joel had included them, incorrectly believing that Larry had been involved. Note also that whilst the first eight tracks are sequenced per People's first four (mono) US singles, I Love You and Ashes Of Me are actually the stereo LP mix. Apple Cider is also a stereo mix, probably sourced from the compilation album Super Oldies Vol. 4

[Go to Song Page]
Do you hear the music baby
It’s all around
Do you feel the rhythm baby
It goes up and down
Do you see the organ grinder
He’s a grinding man
He’s got a beautiful box full of music
In his hand
When I’m with the organ grinder
He gets me going
Ahh he moves me baby
From a-head to soul
And then I get a deep pulsation
In my heart
I can’t stop moving baby
A-once I start wa-ah-ah
Wow right
Do you hear the music baby
It’s all around
Do you feel the rhythm baby
It goes a-up and down
Keep your eye on the organ grinder
He’s a grinding man
He’s got a beautiful box full of music
In his hand wa-ah-ah
Ahheeow, right

High, riding high
On a trip in a ship through the sky
I keep looking through the cloud
Everything seems fine
Everything I'll ever want is mine
Riding high

On a trip in a ship through the sky
I keep reaching through the mist
Melting fire with snow
Watching changes in the world below
Bap ba ba ba bap ba ba ba bap ba bap ba
Ba ba ba bap ba ba ba bap ba ba ba bap bap
I keep looking through the cloud
Everything seems fine
Everything I'll ever want is mine

[Go to Song Page]
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
I love you, I love you
I love you, yes I do
But the words won’t come
And I don’t know what to say
I should tell you I love you I do
The words should explain
But the words won’t come
I shouldn’t hide
My love deep inside
The words should explain
But the words won’t come
I should tell you just how I feel
And I keep trying
But something holds me back when
I try to tell you
I love you, I love you
I love you, yes I do
I love you, I love you
I love you, yes I do
But the words won’t come
And I don’t know what to say
I shouldn’t hide
My love deep inside
The words should explain
But the words won't come
If you could see
What you mean to me
The words should explain
But the words won’t come
And oh how hard I try to tell you
I love you
But something holds me back when
I try to tell you
I love you, l love you
I love you, yes l do
I love you, I love you
I love you, yes I do
But the words won't come
And I don't know what to say yeah

somebody tell me my name
[Go to Song Page]
As I wander through this city
In a nameless town I walk
Now I've got this empty feeling
Names on sidewalks scribed in chalk
But powdered people cannot talk
Can this be a city's tombstone
Broken neon signs that say
Happy days are here forever
I think I'm in a play
So let me think about today
What will become of me now that I'm here
When will the crowd give a cheer
Have you got the time of day
It doesn't bother me
The time I've got could fill a day
In one eternity
It seems so strange it doesn't change
There's no one here but me
I wouldn't like to take a chance
In real reality
So long ago the city roared
It filled me inside out
Today I find an empty peace
I shatter with my shout
Look into windows where people have been
No one expected to win
Climbing stairs to reach the ending
Of a life that's been a sham
Why should I be left to wander
City won't you take this man
No one left to lend a hand
Everything happens when nothing's the same
Somebody tell me my name
Somebody tell me my name [x8]
As I wander through this city
In a nameless town I walk
Now I've got this empty feeling
Names on sidewalks scribed in chalk

ashes of me
[Go to Song Page]
Make your distinctive statements good friends
Print all my features then print them again
All who find time to look through their hair
See only collages of me standing there
Ooh ooh
I’ve stopped short of reading my name on the wall
The name I was given is not mine at all
Run from your corners and smack into walls
Your one point of view just has no view at all
Stand up and brag to your neighbour, I’m free
But what does it matter, they’re deaf and can’t see
Ooh ooh oh woh
Make your distinctive statement good friends
Print all my features then print them again ooh woh
Signs on theatres invite you to see (Ah ah ah ah)
A colourless movie that’s featuring me (Ah ah ah ah)
Ha

apple cider

I know a girl who lives on apple cider
On a hot summer's day I know where to find her
Sitting in the shade with that cool apple cider
Oh you've got it made with that cool apple cider
Look at her face, the glow of apple cider
And I know a place, huh, where I can get some cider
Sitting in the shade with that cool apple cider
Oh you've got it made with that cool apple cider
You've got to give me some
Uh give me some, aooow
Uh give me some, yeeaaa
Give me some apple cider
I know a girl who lives on apple cider
On a hot summer's day I know where to find her

turnin' me in
I wanted to ???
So I cleave myself to you
You promised me love
Said that's the least that you could do
Love, when you were mine
We had it working for a time
Like the wind
You blew in
Then the rain
Now the pain
You're turning me in
You got what you wanted from the man
Turning me in
You're closing the door on all our plans
You're turning me in
Whatever happened to turning me on
How should I have known
That you were just a good time girl
One flick of the wrist
And you erased me from your world
Ah, build me a dream
???
Like the wind
You blew in
Then the rain
Now the pain
You're turning me in
You got what you wanted from the man
You're turning me in
You're closing the door on all our plans
Turning me in
Whatever happened to turning me on
You're turning me in
You got what you wanted from the man
You're turning me in

You're turning me in

Am I gonna love you too
Wo oh oh
Ulla, Ulla, tell me what you got
Everyone in love with you

Do I have to stand in line

If I do I must resign

Everyone's in love with you

Have you seen what's happened lately
Not much time is left to go
Children of this generation
Changing faster than they grow
Watch out all you children
Close your ears and hide your eyes
Don’t be stiffened by the rust that
Sets you living pre-planned lives
Look around the world we've fashioned
Built it up so you could take
Modern ways to make you happy
But you don’t appreciate
Watch out all you children
Close your ears and hide your eyes
Don’t be stiffened by the rust that
Sets you living pre-planned lives
I hope you know where you're going
The road sign points at nowhere
The drums of flames surround you
Rivers of age can drown you
Oh
How can we be proud and trusting
When you throw your lives away
Never think about the future
How could you have gone astray
Watch out all you children
Close your ears and hide your eyes
Don’t be stiffened by the rust that
Sets you living pre-planned lives
Have you seen what's happened lately

Let us all stand for this [Spoken]
You can read it in the morning papers
Hear it on the radio
How crime is a-sweeping our nation
This world is about to go
We need a good old case of salvation
To keep the love of God in our souls
We need a whole lot more of Jesus
And a lot less rock and roll
We need more old fashioned preachers
Pouring out their hearts in prayer
'Cause when you’re in their presence
Why you know that the Lord is there
Hallelujah, brethren (Hallelujah reverend)
We need a nationwide revival
To keep the love of God in our souls
We need a whole lot more of Jesus
And a lot less rock and roll
We need a whole lot more of Jesus
And a lot less rock and roll

Will you all be seated now? [Spoken]

And I still love you
Don't wanna go
Don't wanna stay
I still love you
But now I know
This is the day
That I care

Despite how hard I tried
To get you off my mind
Your memory’s locked inside

Darling please forgive my hasty heart
If I seem a bit too hasty please forgive me
But I'm just afraid I'll lose you if I'm slow
And I can't afford to wait until you want me
'Cause I need you just too much to let you go
All I ask is that you try to understand me
I'm confused now and I need a little time
I'm so afraid that if I somehow get hurt inside
I'll end upside down outside my mind
Darling please forgive my hasty heart
If I only knew a way that I could reach you
I would let out every fear I've kept inside
I'm afraid that if I'm forced to live without you
I'll end upside down outside my mind
If I seem a bit too hasty please forgive me
But I'm just afraid I'll lose you if I'm slow
And I can't afford to wait until you want me

[Go to Song Page]
She’s a dancer in the garden (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
And she dances with the flowers (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
In the early morning hours (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
When the wind shifts (Ooh-ooh)
And the fog drifts (Ooh-ooh)
She’s a dancer
She’s a dancer and she knows it (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
Everywhere she goes she shows it (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Condescending (Ooh-ooh)
Not pretending (Ooh-ooh)
No regretting (Ooh-ooh)
No forgetting (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
She’s a dancer
And on my early morning walks I often find her
I sit pretending that I’m looking at the paper
Oh
And when people stop to watch her (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
She pretends she doesn’t see them (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Doesn’t need them (Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh)
And where she goes
There the wind blows (Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh)
Though it’s only with the flowers (Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh)
That she dances
And on my early morning walks I often find her
I sit pretending that I’m looking at the paper
She’s a dancer in the garden (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)

blow in my ear and i'll follow you anywhere
[Go to Song Page]
I met this girl who was twenty miles from beautiful
Who decided she and I should tie the knot
She's a woman in the market
For a lifetime place to park it
But I'm not
She tried to win my love with home cooking
You know she never had a chance from the start
The lesson for today
Is my stomach ain't the way
To my heart
(Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere)
(Blow in my ear and I'm sure you will find) Oo-uh
(That the way to get near is to blow in my ear)
(Blow in my ear and you're blowing my mind)
(Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere)
(Blow in my ear and I'm sure you will find)
(That the way to get near is to blow in my ear)
(Blow in my ear and you're blowing my mind)
No you can't turn my head with your perfume
And you can't turn me on with your booze
So just do what I say
And turn me every which way
But loose
(Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere)
(Blow in my ear and I'm sure you will find)
(That the way to get near is to blow in my ear)
(Blow in my ear and you're blowing my mind)
(Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere)

(Blow in my ear and I'm sure you will find)
(That the way to get near is to blow in my ear)
(Blow in my ear and you're blowing my mind)
(Blow in my ear and I'll follow you anywhere) [x3]
letter from the president
[Go to Song Page]
I got a letter today from the president
And it came all the way from Washington, DC
At the top he put my name instead of resident
And signed it at the bottom personally
Well I wonder why the heck he'd want to write to me
But I suppose that he is everybody's friend
And I guess he likes to keep in touch with all his country's people
Even those who can't write letters back to him
Oh I never started school but learned the golden rule
And the preacher taught me how to print my name
And it's twice as bad as stealing if you hurt somebody's feeling
So I better write a letter to the president today
Ooh
Oh ohh ye-eh-eh
Oh I never started school but learned the golden rule
And the preacher taught me how to print my name
And it's twice as bad as stealing if you hurt somebody's feeling

prelude
you can't take away the lord
[Go to Song Page]
You can take away my kids
Take away my wife
You can take away my job
You can take away my life
You can take away my house
Take away my Ford
But you can't take away the Lord
Now listen Satan
You just can't take away the church
Or the bible book
Unless you wanna waste your time
You better take a second look
'Cause you can't take away my shield
Can't take away my sword
And you can't take away the Lord
Well he made me and he saved me, ba ba ba
And I follow after
Everywhere he leads
There's peace and laughter
Laughing in the spirit
Listen and you'll hear it
You can take away the pill
And the atom bomb
Take away Einstein's theories
And the things all yet to come
You could'a took away the wheel
With the dinosaur
But you can't take away the Lord, oh no
Well he made me and he saved me, ba ba ba ba-ow
And I follow after
Everywhere he leads
There's peace and laughter
Laughing in the spirit
Listen and you'll hear it
You can take away the pill
And the atom bomb
Take away Einstein's theories
And the things all yet to come
You could'a took away the wheel
With the dinosaur
But you can't take away the Lord
Na na na no you'll never take away
My sweet reward

ha ha world
[Go to Song Page]
Ha ha world
Every day I used to write you a letter
But you never wrote back
And you never made me feel any better
Always sat in here
Fretting and getting confused
Halfway desperate
For a headline of hope in the news
When the telephone rang
I spilled it all over my sweater
Oh yeah
The call was for me
And I answered the phone in the kitchen (Ha ha world, ha ha world)
But the room was too hot
I forgot I was cooking my chicken (Ha ha world, ha ha world)
I was burning like hell
But the stove wasn't on
Then the voice on the line
Says the chicken is gone
The receiver goes dead and it
Hums while the plot starts to thicken
Oh oh yeah oh
Would I have hung up the phone had I known
The whole room would start swaying (Ha ha world, ha ha world)
I was instantly cold
And I knew why my life wasn't paying (Ha ha world, ha ha world)
I had money and fame
But my wealth wasn't wise
What good are the coins on a dead man's eyes
And the ringing of chimes in my head
Said it's time to start praying
Oh oh yeah oh
I’ve been sitting here praying
And laying up treasures in heaven (Ha ha world, ha ha world)
I was home and the front door was locked
When the clock struck eleven (Ha ha world, ha ha world)
I heard the bride outside yell millennium
Though the sun was still up
The twelfth hour has come
The bible says
Without a vision the people perish
Ha ha world
Every day I used to write you a letter
But you never wrote back

the last supper
[Go to Song Page]
There was a pig on the table
With a fig in his mouth
And a snake crawled around the plate
And when the wine turned to water
And the bread turned to dust
I knew I'd arrived too late
It was the last supper
A seven course meal for the soul
It was the last supper
But I was the last to know
I saw my name in a book
That lay in front of the veil
With a key in between the pages
And when I unlocked the door
I found a hall full of mirrors
And I saw my life in stages
It was the last supper
And a snake crawled around the plate
It was the last supper
And I knew I'd arrived too late
Ah ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah
Last night I came to the gate
With invitation in hand
And my old life left behind
I came as soon as he called
But long before I had planned
Still I came prepared to dine
It was the last supper
And a snake crawled around the plate
It was the last supper
And I knew I'd arrived too late
There was a pig on the table
With a fig in his mouth
And a snake crawled around the plate
And when the wine turned to water

nothing really changes
[Go to Song Page]
Nothing really changes
Everything remains the same
We are what we are till the day that we die [x2]
If we could live in Shakespeare's days
I wonder who we'd be
If people then could live today
I wonder who we'd see
They'd prob'ly stop a corner cop
And ask what the whole world's coming to
If people then could live today
I wonder what they'd do
Yes I wonder what they'd do
Would Romeo and Juliet watch Nelson Eddy kiss Jeanette
Would Bacchus read Police Gazette
And window peep at silhouettes
Would Caesar pay to see the Mets
Would Icarus join the jet set
Would Satan smoke menthol cigarettes
Would Samson razor with Gilette
Bi di dip'n bow
Nothing really changes
Everything remains the same
We are what we are till the day that we die
Unless we love the Lord
(Nothing really changes) Nothing really changes
Everything remains the same
We are what we are till the day that we die
Would Henry the eighth use etiquette
In a busy New York luncheonette
Would Cleopatra die when bit
Or save herself with a tourniquet
Would Beethoven join a jazz quartet
Would Ben Hur drive a blue Corvette
Would Aristotle be an acid head
Would Cain kill Abel with a bayonet, ah
(Nothing really changes)
Everything remains the same
We are what we are till the day that we die

Everything remains the same
We are what we are till the day that we die) [x3]

I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Do you suppose a miracle
Is happening to me, to me
Heaven is in your mind
When love is in your heart
Na na na na na na na na
Ha ha world, ha ha world
Na na na na na na na-na na
When you know a wonderful secret
You don't let it go unsaid
I wish we'd all been ready [x7]

moses in the wilderness
[Go to Song Page]
So that's how I wrote this song, from what I learned in Sunday school. You know when you write a song you can only write about what you know and when you're nine years old you don't know very much. But I knew the song had to rhyme and I knew it had to have some big words in it, 'cos church songs had big words in 'em, and th', an' that makes them good. And eh, I always hoped the choir would sing this song, but they never did. This is my song [Spoken]
Moses tending sheep in the fields one day
Thought he heard a burning scrub-brush say
Go and free your people
From the Pharaoh's hand
Go and take them all to the promised land
Moses knew that God was talking to him
So he set off for Egypt with a vigor and vim
Moses bugged the Pharaoh, he bugged him
And he bugged him
'Till he got his people free
He used real bugs
Ow ow ow ow
Yes indeed
Ow ow he got his people free
Ow ow ow
Ow
Moses on the banks of the wide Red Sea
He stuck out a stick and one two three
The water rolled back
And the people walked down
Everybody knew that they wouldn't drown
Pharaoh told his army, bring 'em all back
Here come the chariots, clickety clack
Moses took his stick
And he closed up the water
And the 'Gyptians all took a bath
Ow ow ow ow
What a laugh
Ow ow they all took a bath
Ow ow ow
Dirty 'Gyptians
Grab my foot, take my hand
Lead me on to the promised land
Milk and honey, milk and honey
Milk and honey, milk and honey
Me and all of your people are here
So keep on sending manna
From the atmosphere
And I always thought if the choir sang this song, it would sound like this [Spoken]
Milk and honey, milk and honey
Milk and honey, milk and honey
Oooh
After forty long years in the wilderness
They finally saw their potential metropolis
They all gave thanks
And they all praised the Lord
Even though it took time he kept his word
He grab-bed their foot and he tooketh their hand
And he brought 'em all over
To the promised land
But it seems to me like an awful long time to be
Looking for a home
Ow ow ow ow
A mighty long roam
Ow ow ow
Looking for a home
Ow ow ow
Never borrow money needlessly
Borrow from HFC
I know that last line doesn't make any sense. It used to. Eh when I was little there was this advertisement on the radio for the HFC, which is the Household Finance Company, and they had a song that said [Spoken]
Never borrow money needlessly, just when you must
Borrow where loans are specialty, from folks you trust
Borrow confidently from HFC [Sung]
So I thought the Jews were wandering around in the desert for forty years and then they went to the promised land, and they needed to build a house or something and they could borrow the money from HFC. I didn't know that HFC wasn't doing business back then. Ha [Spoken]
