Live At The Mac |
1998
|
|
Published on Bandcamp on July 20, 2021, with fixed track splits
|
Live At The Mac was a concert - Eugene, Oregon, August 18, 1979 - bootleg recording that was traded / sold among fans for years, and partially responsible for Larry's decision to release slightly rough sounding recordings such as The Israel Tapes and Roll Away The Stone. He eventually released Live At The Mac himself in 1998, as part of the Illegal Noise series. Whilst the performances are good, the sound quality is very poor. UFO through Song For A Small Circle are performed solo with acoustic guitar, and the other tracks are with a band
Note that the track splits are out of sequence from If God Is My Father to the end of the CD, due to that song being combined with The Outlaw. Note also that the last track is a bonus track, Lonely By Myself, and is taken from another, much better sound quality recording

why don't you look into jesus
[Go to Song Page]
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup
You drown your sorrows till you can't stand up
Take a look at what you've done to yourself
Why don't you put the bottle back up on the shelf
Yellow fingered from your cigarettes
Your hands are shaking while your body sweats
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer
Gonorrhea on Valentine’s day
And you're still looking for the perfect lay
You think rock and roll will set you free
You'll be deaf before you're thirty three
You're shooting junk until you're half insane
Broken needle in your purple vein
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer
Sleep all night
Work all day
Take your money
Throw it all away
Say you're gonna be a superstar
But you never hung around enough
To find out who you really are
Think back to when you were a child
Your soul was free, your heart ran wild
Each day was different, life was a thrill
You knew tomorrow would get better still
But things have changed, you're much older now
If you're unhappy and you don't know how
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer
Yes he does
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer
You oughta check it for yourself
Look into Jesus
He's got the answer
He's got the answer
Yes he does
He's got the answer
You don't choose him, he chooses you
Yes he does
Yes he does
I said now why don't you look into Jesus

i've searched all around the world
[Go to Song Page]
Darkness can't hide much longer
The spirit is getting stronger
You keep the dance halls humming
But the end of the age is coming
I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth
I opened the mouth of love and I found a wisdom tooth
Maybe you think I'm plastic
But your situation's drastic
I'm glad my faith is stronger
This world won't last much longer
I've searched all around the world to find a place of peace
I've sat in the shade of God and I've watched the joy increase
Yes I did
There's no time left for stalling
Can't you hear someone calling
Life all around is crumbling
I think this world is stumbling
Maybe you think I'm wrong now
But this is my only song now
I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth
I opened the mouth of love and I found a wisdom tooth
I've searched all around the world to find a place of peace
I sat in the shade of God and I watched the joy increase
Well I've searched all around, I've searched all around
I've searched all around the world
I don't know what I'm gonna do
An' I got no plans outside of you
I'm on my way to the sky
??
I've got no plans outside of you

soul on fire
[Go to Song Page]
Eldridge was a bad man
At least that's what the people said
He was only trying to figure out
All the things they put inside his head
He was like an angry lion
Trapped in a vice
Couldn't keep him down
And so they put his soul on ice
Well they locked him in a prison cell
But he managed to get away
Well living on the run ain't no fun
Both eyes opened every night and day
Just a little peace and quiet
Was his one desire
But it never came
Till something set his soul on fire
Now the man in the moon
Gave him the word
In a voice that was clear
And a voice that was heard
Go back to your people but lean on me
They can lock you up again but I have set you free
Eldridge says he's different now
But a lot of people disagree
You know they say he's only trying to free himself
I guess in time we all shall see
But I do believe his message
He ain't no liar
When he says that Jesus
Can set your soul on fire
Soul, soul on fire [x2]
Soul on fire [x4]
Soul on fire [x4]
???
I feel so lost
I need your help
Jesus, set my soul on fire
Set my soul on fire
Oh, soul on fire
I said soul, soul on fire
Jesus is ???

Take me through the water, take me through the fire

I don't wanna live that way

[Go to Song Page]
Yeah yeah yeah eh
Oh ???
Oh yeah ah wa ah
Ah-ah-ah
Oh mama killed a chicken, she thought it was a duck
She put it on the table with its legs sticking up
Papa broke his glasses when he fell down drunk
Tried to drown the kitty cat, turned out to be a skunk
You gotta watch what you're doing
Don't you know
Watch where you're going
Little Joe Billy went fishing for trout
Played hooky from school till the cops found out
You know he never had a father, he was an only child
His mama never beat him so he grew up wild
Gotta watch what you're doing
Yes you do
You gotta watch where you're going
Look out who you're talking to
Ah ah ah-ah
I knew a girl, she was sweet as could be
But she fell for a man like a chain sawed tree
Listened to his lies, was fooled by his charms
Now she's sitting with a baby in her arms
You gotta watch what you're doing
Yes you do
Look out, you gotta watch out what you're doing
Oh yeah
Watch out
Ah ah ah ah ah
Aaaah
[Mimics guitar]
Some folks smile
You know ???
Some folks smile
Some folks smile, they seem alright
But later you find out they've got demons in the night
Try to love everybody but don't be blind
'Cause some kind of people try to mess up your mind
Some folks say God is dead
Doesn't exist except inside your head
I wonder how many are gonna be surprised
When they look straight up and see him coming through the sky
???
Gotta watch what you're doing
Yeah
Yeah
Woo-ooh
There's someone after you
I said there's someone after you
He's called Satan
He wants to lock you up in his zoo
He's got a special cage made just for you
???
What's going on? ??? what's going on?

What have you got to say about it

let the tape keep rolling
[Go to Song Page]
Yeah ah yeah
Well I woke up in the morning, I said a morning prayer
I washed my face with soap, I ran my fingers through my hair
I went down to the studio, ??? go to work
The clock said seven thirty, I made it just in time
I greeted the musicians, I grabbed the nearest chair
I started playing my guitar and told the engineer
C'mon (c'mon) let that tape keep rolling [x4]
C'mon (c'mon) let that tape keep rolling, c'mon c'mon c'mon c'mon
First song that we cut was called "Lonely By Myself"
I'll do the vocal later, you can just leave it on the shelf
The second song we cut was called "Unlucky Blues"
Yeah the session's getting better now, we're turning on the juice
The first song took us seven takes, the last one took us ten
If Jesus came down right now I wonder who'd get in
C'mon (c'mon) let that faith keep growing [x5]
Let it grow, let it grow
Do you hear me singing, singing on your record machine
The piano's banging, the guitar's twanging
The water cooler's clanging, light bulb's hanging
Yes the music's playing, the production's clean
Cross fade all the tracks, don't leave no spaces in between
C'mon (c'mon)
I said c'mon (c'mon)
C'mon (c'mon)
?? c'mon (c'mon)
C'mon (c'mon) [x4]
I started out ten years ago with my guitar in my hand
I took the message in my heart, I played it with a band
I went down to Capitol Records to record Upon This Rock
I wanted to say something, I just let the music talk
I know where I am going, I know who I must be
I don't care how long it takes me, there's lots of things to see
C'mon (c'mon) let that tape keep rolling [x5]
C'mon c'mon c'mon
You know he come walking down my street
He come up to my room
He knocked on my door
He come into my heart
He make me feel so good
He made me feel so good, so good, so good
Yes he did
When I die
When I die I'm going home
I'm going home boam boam boam ba boam
Home boam boam boam ba boam
Home boam boam boam ba boam
Home

He come knocking ??? make me feel alright
Like a thief in the middle of the night
Going home

the outlaw
[Go to Song Page]
Some say he was an outlaw
[Skip] the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few young fishermen
No one knew just where he came from
Or exactly what he'd done
But they said it must be something bad
That keeps him on the run
Some say he was a poet
That he'd stand upon the hill
And his words could calm an angry crowd
Or make the waves stand still
That he spoke in many parables
That few could understand
But the people sat for hours
Just to listen to this man
Some say he was a sorcerer
A man of mystery
He could walk upon the water
He could make a blind man see
That he conjured wine at weddings
And did tricks with fish and bread
He talked of being born again
And raised people from the dead
Some say a politician
He talked of being free
He was followed by the masses
On the shores of Galilee
He spoke out against corruption
And he bowed to no decree
But they feared his strength and power
So they nailed him to a tree
Some say he was the son of God
A man above all men
But he came to be a servant
And to set us free from sin
And that's who I believe he was
'Cause that's who I believe
And I think we should get ready
'Cause it's almost time to leave
Yes I think we should get ready 'cause it's time for us to leave
Some say he was an outlaw
[Skip] the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few young fishermen
No one knew just where he came from

Some say a politician
He talked of being free
He was followed by the masses
On the shores of Galilee
He spoke out against corruption
And he bowed to no decree
But they feared his strength and power
So they nailed him to a tree
Some say he was the son of God
A man above all men
But he came to be a servant
And to set us free from sin
And that's who I believe he was
'Cause that's who I believe
And I think we should get ready
'Cause it's almost time to leave
Yes I think we should get ready 'cause it's time for us to leave
if god is my father
[Go to Song Page]
Could you turn up the guitar microphone please? [Spoken]
God is my father
You are my brother
Then why can't we bother
To really reach out and love one another
Why do we keep on acting the way we do
The way we treat each other
It must break his heart in two
Why do we argue
Why are there so many churches
With half of them empty
And some represent a million dollar purchase
What's happened to the message given by our lord
To take his gospel to the streets
To share our money with the poor
And learn to love
He said love is the greatest thing
We've got to learn to love
Love is the only thing
We go to church
We ??? know about God, whether or not there's
[Dropout in the recording]
Predestination
You know whether he chooses us or whether we choose him
Or whether he comes again
??? religion, false religion, ??? religion
??? christians have to go through tribulation
Or ??? escape it
??? tribulation and all this kinda stuff
??? come to concerts, you can sit on the floor
You can talk to your friends
???
But after all this is nineteen seventy, you know nineteen seventies
??? in the sixties
In the sixties we cared about other people
In the seventies we just care about ourselves [Spoken]
You know maybe there's a danger
If you think God chooses everyone
That you don't need to talk to anyone
You don't need to tell 'em about Jesus
But that's ???
??? if God choose people then we don't have to talk to anybody
That's just it you know, we're supposed to spread the good news
Witness in season and out of season
Go into the world and preach the gospel every creature [Half sung, half spoken]
Maybe we oughta show a little love
But you don't think you have to tell anybody about Jesus
'Cos God's gonna tell them about Jesus
The Holy Spirit's gonna tell them about Jesus
Then maybe you should just go next door
And help them mow the lawn, help them watch the kids
Give people money if they need it
If you have enough you don't need it all yourself
You can't ???
??? city that's poor you know [Half sung, half spoken]
You gotta learn to love
You gotta learn to love
Why do we keep on acting the way we do
The way I see us we treat each other
It just breaks my heart in two
We call ourselves christians
Do we know what that's like
Do we really believe when God says
When the bible says, when Jesus says that
If they really love you, if we don't love our brother
Then ??? don't really love you
But I don't ???
It's not like the Indians ???
All they have to do is get up every day and go plant some seeds and go pray for rain
We have lots of other stuff to do you know
We gotta figure out which car wash to get our car washed at
??? pay for gas
??? park and get a double cheeseburger or just a regular hamburger
Should I get some fries
???
We have so much to worry about
??? [Half sung, half spoken]
You gotta learn to love
Love is the greatest thing
Love is the only thing
Love is the greatest thing
And we all need to concentrate on Jesus
Talk to him about our sins
Are you ready ??? life
'Cos he might be coming back again very soon
Wo oh oh ah

song for a small circle of friends
[Go to Song Page]
My life is filled with songs
But I just could not get along without my friends
And I'm happy now but when this good life ends
I know a better life begins
And love to Randy Stonehill
With his guitar full volume on his amp
Turn it up please
He's so crazy but he knows it
And I love him as we both crawl toward the lamp
With Clapton on guitar
Charlie Watts on drums tsss
McCartney on the Hofner bass
With blisters on his thumbs
Dear Dylan watch your fears all hide
And disappear while love inside keeps growing
Oh let it keep growing
You're older but less colder
Than the jokes and folks you spent your childhood snowing
Yes you did
And someone died for all you friends
But even better yet he lives again
And if these words do not appeal to you
I hope his spirit slips on through
He loves you
He loves you, oh yes he really does
He loves you, do you really care
If this song does not appeal to you
Then I just hope his spirit slips on through
He loves you
He loves you, listen with your heart
He loves you
Do not forget him
If your life does not make sense to you
There's someone you're not talking to
He loves you
La la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la

[Go to Song Page]
We only have a little bit of time left. Uh, I'd like to apologise to the sound-men because I upset them when I asked them to turn up the guitar. They said it was loud enough. I couldn't hear it, I didn't think it was loud enough, but they said it was so I'm sorry. It was loud enough ??? anybody in the audience ??? [Spoken]
I've been shot down, talked about
Some people scandalize my name
Here I am trying to talk about Jesus just the same
I've been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame
Oh here I am trying to talk about Jesus just the same
I been rebuked for the things I've said
For the songs I've written and the life I've led
Some people don't understand me but I'm not surprised
'Cause you can't see nothing when you close your eyes
They say I'm sinful, backsliding
That I have left to follow fame
Oh here I am talking 'bout Jesus just the same
Oh oh oh oh
Yeah
You wanna talk about my life hey listen to me
You got your facts all backwards, one two three
Spreading rumors and gossip is a real bad game
The only name to spread is Jesus name
I've been shot down, talked about
People scandalize my name
All I wanna do is talk about Jesus
All I wanna do is talk about him
Here I am talking 'bout Jesus just the same
Wo oh oh oh

why should the devil have all the good music
[Go to Song Page]
I want the people to know
That he saved my soul
But I still like to listen to the radio
They say rock and roll is wrong
We'll give you one more chance
Say I feel so good that I'm gonna get up and dance
I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I don't confuse it
All I'm really trying to say is
Why should the devil have all the good music
I feel good, I feel okay
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
They say to cut my hair
Driving me insane
I grew it out long to make room for my brain
Sometimes people don't understand
They say what's a good boy doing in a rock and roll band
There's nothing wrong with playing blues licks
If you've got a scripture, show me to my face
Why should the devil have all the good music
There's nothing wrong with what I play, aaaah
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
Yes he did, alright
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that has a beat
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that can move my feet
I don't like some of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet
No
Woo
Jesus told the truth
Jesus showed the way
There's one more thing I'd like to say
They nailed him to the cross
And they laid him in the ground
But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down
I been filled, I feel okay
All I really wanna know
Why should the devil have all the good music
There's nothing wrong, what I play
I'm playing blues
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues
Jesus is the rock, he'll roll your blues

[Go to Song Page]
Lost and blind then a friend of mine
Come and took me by the hand
And he led me to his kingdom
That was in another land
I've been so blessed, he made me rest
I finally feel like I've passed the test
I wanna be like him, that's my goal
Like a rock that doesn't roll
Well he's the rock that doesn't roll
He's the rock that doesn't roll
Good for the body, great for the soul
The rock that doesn't roll
I was all alone like a rolling stone
Going nowhere fast
On the road, so far from home
When the future touched my past
You know, I'm not the same, just rearranged
I think of my past, ??? I feel so strange
Wowie zowie that cat got soul
Rock that doesn't roll
Oh he's the rock that doesn't roll
He's the rock that doesn't roll

Rock that doesn't
Rock that doesn't
You've got to rock me on the water
You've got to rock me from my grave
You've got to rock me till I'm feeling good
You've got to rock me till I'm, rock me till I'm saved
Ow I wanna tell you
He's the rock that doesn't roll

I rode in a subway underneath the ground and watched through the windows of this train as we passed through tunnels in and out of tunnels, in and out and 'em past pillars that held the whole tunnel up, just ah like a movie camera that was going off the reel, black and white, black and white. You'd see people and they'd disappear. We stopped at one station and I looked out through the window and I saw that somebody had written on the wall with a spray paint can, they'd written 'Isn't anybody there? Doesn't anybody care?' And I wrote this song [Spoken]
If I
If I could find someone who'd really love me right
They'd make my life complete, they'd make my soul shine bright
I've looked around the world, I've walked down every street
Still I can't find no one to give me what I need
It's such a lonely life, I almost cry each night
'Cause fate has put me on the shelf
I get so lonely, so lonely by myself
If I could find someone who really cared for me
Someone will share my love and keep me company
If I could find someone I'd let them take control
And in exchange for love I'd give my very soul
It's such a lonely life, I almost cry each night
'Cause fate has put me on the shelf
I get so lonely, so lonely by myself
It's such a lonely life, I almost cry each night
'Cause fate has put me, fate has put me on the shelf
I get so lonely, so lonely by myself
I get so lonely, so lonely
So lonely by myself
Who can I turn to, doesn't anybody care
Isn't anybody there
Ooh-oo-oo-ooh, doesn't anybody listen
Doesn't anybody care
