intro / prayer
And so we're just delighted to have him here this afternoon, we were thrilled when we knew we could and we jumped at the opportunity for eh to, to present him in New York City. Now the bible tells us clearly that we wanna make all of our wants and wishes known to God in prayer. I'm gonna ask you to stand with me right now and to pray. Because we want and we wish that God would bless every aspect of this concert, that it would not be some mini Jesus celebration but again another release of divine power by the Holy Spirit. Let's pray to that end
Father, we thank you that we can gather in your presence this afternoon. Not to look on a man but to hear from you. We ask oh Lord again that you will anoint Larry Norman's words and his ability as a musician, that he might be afresh a channel of blessing, a channel of redemption. Speak a word oh Lord to every heart open in your presence. Then father we thank you right now in advance for those new brothers and sisters who will become a part of God's family today. Lord cover by the blood of Jesus every aspect of this concert. We pray it for Christ's sake and in his name. Amen. Amen. You may be seated [Spoken by host]

He's an unidentified flying object
You will see him in the air
He's an unidentified flying object
And you will drop your hands and stare
You will be afraid to tell your neighbours
They might think that it's not true
But when you open up the morning papers
You will know they've seen it too
He will come back like he promised
With the price already paid
He will gather up his followers
And take them all away
He's an unidentified flying object
He will sweep down from the sky
He's an unidentified flying object
Some will sleep, but will not die
He's an unidentified flying object
Coming back to take you home
He's an unidentified flying object
He will roll away your stone
And if there's life on other planets
Then I'm sure that he must know
And he's been there once already
And has died to save their souls
He's an unidentified flying object
You will see him in the air
He's an unidentified flying object
You will drop your hands and stare

the vicissitudes of religion
There's been a lot of controversy in the last few years about most things in the world. Maybe there's just a lot more people you know, and everybody has an opinion. But especially in church there's been a lot of controversy. The, the Catholic church is changing a lot of the rules and people are getting confused, some of the catholics, because they don't really know, well is it alright for a priest to get married or isn't it?
An', and how come I've had this medal around my neck for so many years and now all of a sudden he's not a saint anymore? Stuff like that's confusing. Controversy in church, should, should people dress a certain way to come to church or can they be who they are, come as they are and worship God? Is it easier to worship God when you've got a collar around your neck or, you know, if you have an open collar are you more free to concentrate on worship? And what about this? Hmm? What about rock and roll music? Well what is rock and roll music? Is it loud music with [mimics guitar] you know? [Mimics drums] Or is it music that communicates to people of a certain generation?
And we all have to sort out all kinds of questions in life for ourselves. So it's best to, you know, pray. Let God help us make decisions. Remember, there's a new generation that comes along every, how many years. And maybe my grandparents didn't understand you parents, and you didn't understand us. Come on, I don't even understand my own brother, he's like eight years old and I don't understand him. He brings home math, I can't even help him. They don't even count carrots anymore in school. So we have to adjust to the changing world. And God knows what's going on, it's good to ask him

why should the devil
[Go to Song Page]
I want the people to know
That he saved my soul
But I still like to listen to the radio
They say rock and roll is wrong
We'll give you one more chance
I say I feel so good I gotta get up and dance
I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I don't confuse it
An' all I wanna know is
Why should the devil have all the good music
I feel good every day
Because Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
You say to cut my hair
It's driving me insane
I grew it out long to make room for my brain
But sometimes people don't understand
What's a christian doing in a rock and roll band
I know what's right, I know what's wrong
Don't you confuse it
All I wanna know is
Why should the devil have all the good music
An' I feel good every day, yes I do
Because Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
[Mimics guitar solo]
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that has a beat
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that moves my feet
I don't like none of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet
Jesus told the truth
An’ Jesus showed the way
An' there's one more thing I'd like to say
They nailed him to the cross
And they laid him in the ground
But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down
Woo

one way
[Go to Song Page]
One way, one way to heaven
Hold up high your hand
One way, free and forgiven
Children of the lamb
Two roads diverged in the middle of my life
I heard the poet say
And I took the one less travelled by
And that’s made the difference
Every night and every day
One way, one way to heaven
Hold your fingers high
Follow, free and forgiven
Children of the sky
Children of the sky
In our youth we knew the truth
But we spent many years sitting on the wrong track
Now that we're older we're bolder
And it’s high time we were getting back
And that’s a fact
One way, only one way to heaven
Hold up high your hand
There's one way and it's free and forgiven
You are children of the lamb
You are children of the lamb
Children of the lamb
One way, one way to heaven
Hold up high your hand
One way, free and forgiven
Children of the lamb
Two roads diverged in the middle of my life

up in canada
[Go to Song Page]
When I was up in Canada
I didn't have much money
You know my toes were cold
And my clothes had holes
And my nose was kinda runny
I met a long-hair on the street
He said look you look like you'd like to eat
I said a glass of coke and a hotdog's fine
He said well how about some bread and a glass of wine
I said lead me on, lead me on, lead me on
Lead me on where you're going
I said my body's tired but my heart's inspired
And my hunger's growing
A' lead me on, lead me on, lead me on
Lead me on where you're going
I said my body's tired but my heart's inspired
And my hunger's growing
He took a loaf of Wonder bread
Then he bowed his head
And then he poured a cup, drink it up my friend
You know it tasted better than a health food blend
He looked straight into my eyes
I was quite surprised
He said you're locked inside but I can set you free
You will live forever if you follow me
I said lead me on, lead me on, lead me on
Lead me on where you're going
I said my body's tired but my heart's inspired
And my hunger's growing
An' I hope it's showing
Lead me on, lead me on, lead me on
Lead me on where you're going

And my hunger's growing
When I was up in Canada
I didn't have much money

I said woo

blue shoes white
[Go to Song Page]
I have the rhythm of living in my shoes
Along come the rhythm and blues
Blues caught up and put me in a trance
And my shoes refused to dance
My life began to slip and slide
I had no hope, no place to hide
I borrowed a gun, I had nothing to lose
I figured it's time to hang up my shoes
He came along that very day
He asked me why walk this way
I said my soles half worn, my tongue hung out
And with broken laces I'm tripping out
He said to me, get up and walk
And I said why don't we sit down and talk
He said how 'bout a new soul
I said uh-uh, no chance, I'm gonna put these shoes in an ambulance
Be-u-bap, be-u-bap, ooh
Ba-la-ba ba-ba-ba-a la-na-dow-lown
Da-na-la-la-boop-bow-de-ah-da-loo boop-ba-de-ah-da-doo-bow
Well he reached right out and he touched my toes
I bet you can guess how the rest of the story goes
So if you're slopping through life then my appeal
Is to follow in his footsteps and get your soles reheeled
And if you wanna give your feet a treat
Then get ready to walk down that golden street
But be careful how you use your shoes
And don't waste your life on the rhythm and blues
You can rock and roll for Jesus if you wanna [Spoken]
But don't waste your life on the rhythm and blues
And he turn ya, your blue shoes white
Yes he does, if you got blue shoes he'll turn 'em white
He'll make your wrong feet walk fine
Make you, day out of the night
He'll make ya, he'll make your blacks so white
That's right, he's turn your blues shoes white
'Cause he does ya
Woo
He'll make you feel alright
La la la la la

culture and christ
Sometimes it's necessary to say things and sometimes music communicates. Uh, music really is cultural. You see, I never really understood some uh, music when people dance like that. And Benny Goodman, I thought, well he wasn't square, he was just too avant garde for me. I really want this to communicate to the people that, that don't listen to the radio, you know, beyond the news. And I'd really rather not speak and explain all the, the music. But if you keep this in mind, that a lot of music reflects what happens in people's lives, then this should also reflect what's happened to a lot of us sitting here. We've been walking along, doing our own thing, or doing everybody else's thing, and God's come down, just one day, sometimes with no warning, and stood in front of us and held out his hands
And we've grabbed them. And he's been so steady, we've been able to walk with him from that moment on. And it doesn't matter what you did before. What ma', life really begins when you meet Jesus. The good life. Some people's hearts don't really beat with enthusiasm until they meet Jesus

song for a small circle of friends
[Go to Song Page]
My life is filled with songs
But I just couldn't get along without my friends
And I'm happy now but when this good life ends
I know a better one begins
And love to you Stonehill
Armed with your guitar full gallop on your amp
Ah, you're so Randy and you show it
But I love you as we both crawl t'ward the lamp
Fred Bova on guitar
Ow u-wow [Mimicing guitar]
With Hilly on the drums
Glenn Selwitz on the Hofner bass
With blisters on his thumbs
Dear Roger watch the dollar hide
And disappear while love inside starts growing
You're older but less colder
Than the jokes and folks you spent your childhood snowing
And Jesus died for all you friends
But even better yet he lives again
And if words do not appeal to you
I hope his spirit slips on through, he loves you
He loves you
He loves you
And if this song does not appeal to you
I hope his spirit slips on through, he loves you
He loves you
He loves you
And if these words do not appeal to you
I hope his spirit slips on through, he loves you

miracles
[Go to Song Page]
I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real, I don't pretend
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Life is no one's friend
But then we met, suddenly
I felt so strange, I felt a change come over me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
I don't believe in miracles
I've been around, I've seen enough
The only way to get along you must be strong
You must be tough
Life is one big bluff
Then I opened up the door
And you walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
Then we met and suddenly
I felt so strange, I felt the change come over me
Do you suppose a m'
I don't believe in miracles

is there something more?
I suppose a number of us have been asking that question over the last year, last recent years, is a miracle happening to me. If you're here today and, and that's a question that's current with you, is there something there? As you listen to the second part of the concert, ask that. Do you know the whole reality? Have you got it all figured out? Or is there maybe something more? Think about it

you knew what you were doing
[Go to Song Page]
I had a baby out of wedlock
Her old man got me in a headlock
I was an unwed father
But don't bother feeling sorry for me
I took a lot of LSD
I smoked a lot of mar-ja-weenie
But it did not help me
And it did not set me free
Jesus, why'd you go and do it
Why’d you help a guy like me
You saved me, you forgave me
And I swear you set me free
Aw, you took away my problems
One by one
I guess God knew what he was doing
When he sent his son
Woo ooh hoo ooh hoo-oo-ooh ooh hoo ooh-oohum
You know the way that I’ve been living
It has been taking without giving
And I hurt a lot of people
And I lost my friends
And I spent a little time in prison
But I know the Lord has risen
And I'll never need
To be locked up again
Oh Jesus, why'd you go and do it
Wo-oh why’d you help a guy like me
You saved me, you forgave me
And I swear you set me free

center of the universe
This is an interesting city to be in. I've been here before several times. Every time I go out and, you know, Broadway and 47th, I just feel like I'm in the, the center of the universe. There's stores there that sell shoes for like sixty two dollars a pair. And there's kids that don't have any looking through the bars on the windows at night
And people just don't seem to notice each other all the time. I used to, I used to hear about New York City before I came here, I'd, I thought there were rats, you know, in every movie theater an', and that's why people kept their feet up off the floor. And, oh all kinds of stories. I heard that, that things, tractors fell off of roofs, I didn't know what they were there for. Now I found out it was cranes, those big cranes that, what do they put a crane up on top of a building for? To pull, pull down some of the sky or something, I don't know. Sometimes they end up in the ground and, and breaks the water where, I was riding into town one time and I said why are we going the long way, I've been here before and the taxi driver said I'm not trying to get a lot of money off you, really. A crane fell off a building, broke the water, it's all over the streets, like we're gonna have to go way around. Really? Oh yeah, yeah, happened last week too hh-hhm
I like this city, spiritually I like this city a lot. You know it's much easier to see a little light when you're in a dark room. And it's much easier to really see how the christian message affects people in a city like this. A long time ago I was accused o', of being anti church. I'm not anti church. I think we are the church if we love Jesus. It's not really the building, it's the people. 'Cause when you go home God doesn't stay in the building waiting for you to come back. It's really in us. And we're not only to love each other, because we love Jesus, but to love others too. And not just to love each other, well the bible says love thy neighbor as thyself. But then it goes one harder and it says we should love one another even as he loves us. Oh. I'm disqualified. Can I leave now? Well if you have God in you then his love starts to develop. You don't have to use your own resources, you have his. That's what makes it possible to turn the other cheek when someone strikes you. His love, not yours. Your love would at least put up a fist to defend yourself, or duck
Jesus is not a religion. Maybe a lot of people make him into a religion, by confining him and making him smaller than he is. By taking one part of the bible and making that the whole basis of their religion. But you take the whole part of the bible and God becomes very large. So we shouldn't pull God down to our level, we shouldn't shrink him. And it's not a matter of religion at all, it's Jesus. Jesus loves us all. No matter what religion we think we are, the spirit of God can come on all of us, if we're open to it

Really? Oh yeah, yeah, happened last week too hh-hhm

diamonds

You can take your treasures and lock them in your room
And you will lose everything you save
You can take your flowers and lay them on his tomb
But I saw him rise up from the grave

You can take your flowers and lay them on his tomb

strong love, strange peace
[Go to Song Page]
Backstage, I cross the middle ground
Curtain up, house lights down
I sing love songs and pass myself around
And afterwards
Some people say they thought I put them down
They feel so bad
It does not matter what I say
I hope tomorrow they have a better day
They seem so caught
They need release
They need your strong love and strange peace
Reporters question me, is this a new direction for the young
How lamb like their faces
How snake like their tongues
They quote me perfectly
Then rewrite every word I speak
And go away convinced we're all some new kind of freaks
I feel so good
It does not matter what they say
I hope tomorrow they have a better day
They seem so trapped
They need release
They need your strong love and strange peace
They need your strong love and strange peace
Please give them your strong love and strange peace

why don't you look into jesus
[Go to Song Page]
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup
You drown your sorrows ‘til you can’t stand up
A take a look at what you’ve done to yourself
Why don’t ya put the bottle back on the shelf
Yellow fingered from your cigarettes
Your hands are shaking while your body sweats
Why don’t you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Oom boom tch
A' gonorrhoea on valentine’s day, VD
And you’re still looking for the perfect lay
You think rock and roll will set you free
Honey, you’ll be deaf before you’re thirty three
You're shooting junk 'til you’re half insane
Broken needle in your purple vein
Why don’t you look into Jesus
He's got the answers
You sleep all night, you work all day
You take your money, throw it all away
You say you’re gonna be a superstar
But you never hung around enough to find out who you really are
Now think back to when you were a child
Your soul was free, your heart ran wild
Each day was different, life was a thrill
You knew tomorrow would be better still
But things have changed, you’re much older now
If you’re unhappy and you don’t know how
Why don’t you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Why don’t you look into Jesus
He got the answers
Yes he does
Why don’t you look into Jesus
He got the answers
Ooh
He got the answer
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup

righteous rocker holy roller #1
[Go to Song Page]
You can be a righteous rocker
Or a holy roller
You can be most anything
You can be a Leon Russell
Or a super muscle
You can be a corporate king
You could be a wealthy man from Texas
Or a witch with heavy hexes
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain't nothing without love
You could be a brilliant surgeon
Or a sweet young virgin
Or a harlot out to sell
You could learn to play the blues
Or be Howard Hughes
Or the Scarlet Pimpernel
You could be a French provincial midwife
Or go from door to door with a death knife
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain't nothing without love
Break [Spoken]

I, I probably should explain something I guess. Um, when I record I use a lot of different i', instruments, you know back up musicians and stuff. When I go on tour I'm by myself so they're not with me. I just want you to know this section of the song right here is the, the lead guitar solo. One, two, three, four, take it [Spoken]
[Mimics guitar solo]
You could be a woman feeler
Or a baby stealer
You can drink your life away
Or you could be a holy prophet
Get a blessing off it
You could fast for fifty days
You could shake hands with the devil
Or give your life to God on the level
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain’t nothing without love
You could be a righteous rocker
Ah huh
You could be a holy roller
You ain’t nothing without love

i wish we'd all been ready
[Go to Song Page]
May I have the microphone on please [Spoken]
Life was filled with guns and war
And everyone got trampled on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold
A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
A man and wife asleep in bed
She hears a noise and turns her head
He's gone
I wish we'd all been ready
Two men walking up a hill
One disappears and one's left standing still
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la la la
Would some of you like to sing this if you know it [Spoken]

prayer
Let's stand together for prayer. Lord we ask that as your children you would send us forth with a new understanding of our relationship to yourself and to one another. And we ask, as those who are uncertain that today you would give us that certainty that is available in Christ Jesus. Thank you once again Lord for our brother, for his ministry, and we pray your hand upon him as he goes forth from this place to testify, to sing, to minister for you. Be with us now each one Lord according to our particular need. For we pray in Jesus' name [Spoken by host]
