This double disc CD release features a solo concert from March 1998, during which Larry performed both with acoustic guitar and with piano. He performed several new songs, including the previously unreleased Endless Life Of Dreams, and described it thus: "Risking the umbrage of 'hype' I think this is the best live concert I've ever put on CD"
Prayer
Uh, be here tonight God. Be here with us an' let us walk in you an', and live right, and live well. Live right, Jesus' name [Spoken]
feed the poor
[Go to Song Page]
You gotta feed the poor
You must obey
If Jesus asks you if you fed the poor
What are you gonna say
You gotta feed the poor
They're dying every day
And if Jesus asks you why you didn't
What are you gonna say
There's a little child
Lying on the ground
Too weak to lift his head up
Too sick to make a sound
You gotta feed the poor
You must obey
But when Jesus asks you if you fed the poor
What are you gonna say
There's a little baby girl
With her eyes shut tight
Her body burns with fever
And there'll be no food tonight
You gotta feed the poor
You must obey
But when Jesus asks you if you fed the poor
What are you gonna say
Ooh ooh [Imitating feedback]

I'd like to sing a song 'bout the end of the world. It's a happy little number [Spoken]
He's an unidentified flying object
You will see him in the air
He's an unidentified flying object
You will drop your hands and stare
You will be afraid to tell your neighbours
They might think that it's not true
But when they open up the morning papers
They will know they've seen him too
He will come back like he promised
With the price already paid
He will gather up his followers
Take us all away
It's alright kid, you can go too if you want [Spoken]
He's an unidentified flying object
He will sweep down from the sky
He's an unidentified flying object
Some will sleep but will not die
He's an unidentified flying object
Coming back to take you home
He's an unidentified flying object
He will roll away your stone
And if there's life on other planets
I'm sure that he must know
And he's been there once already
And has died to save their soul
He's an unidentified flying object
You will see him in the air
He's an unidentified flying object
You will drop your hands and stare
He's an unidentified flying object
Coming back, take you home
He's an unidentified flying object
He will roll away your stone-mmmm-uuuh
Ooh ooh woo woo ooh
Are you okay? How old are you? Four. Next year you'll be? Five [Spoken]

twelve good men
[Go to Song Page]
You need twelve good men
And I can't even find eleven
There were six young lions
And I kept waiting for number seven
I might be living down here on earth
[Squeal of feedback] Maybe not for long but [Spoken]
But I am living for heaven
I got a woman I was in love with
Ain't no need to say her name
And no matter what might happen
I'm always gonna love her just the same
Love is like meeting an angel from heaven
I mean love is just really kinda, it's just, it's just too hard to explain
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Alright, take it boys
Ow ow ow ow ow.... [Imitates guitar solo]
I've got this black leather jacket
Same kind I've worn through all my youth
Ah-ah-ah
Sometimes I put on dark sunglasses
Stand on the street corner and preach and sing
I feel just like William Booth
Ah-ah-ah
So don't ask me nothing about nothing
I just might tell you the truth
You need twelve good men
And I can't even find eleven

'Kay, this is not a new song. This is a song about the end of the world though. But you might like it [Spoken]
In the midst of the war he offered us peace
He came like a lover from out of the east
With the face of an angel and the heart of a beast
His intentions were six sixty six
He walked up to the temple with gold in his hand
And he bought off the priests and propositioned the land
And the world was his harlot and laid in the sand
While the band played six sixty six
[Imitates banjo solo]
It's on the record [Spoken]
[Imitates banjo solo]
We served at his table and slept on the floor
But he starved us and beat us, and nailed us to the door
Well I'm ready to die, I can't take any more
And I'm sick of his lies and his tricks
You know he told us he loved us, that was a lie
There was blood in his pockets and death in his eyes
Well my number is up and I'm ready to die
If the band will play six
If the band will play six sixty si...
If the band will play six sixty six
Pung pung pung pung pung pung pung pung pung

oh little sister
[Go to Song Page]
Oh little sister have I caused you to cry
For some omission of which I know not
I love you so much, my life down I would lie
Deep love of which the kind our saviour has taught
Oh little sister have I led you to pain
By dark and wrongly spoken words aloud
Which made you weep or made you suffer in vain
'Twas done in error, not by my head unbowed
Our dear father watches over us
And surely he will ease our plight
Do not lose the hope he's given you
Nor let peace disappear from sight, oh
Oh little sister have I caused you to sin
Or brought transgression somehow into your home
So many places now my journey has been
Shall I forever through this wide world roam
Our dear father watches over us
And surely he will ease our plight
Do not lose the hope he's given you
Nor let peace disappear from sight
Oh little sister have I caused you to sin
Or brought transgression somehow into your home
So many places now my journey has been
Shall I forever through this wide world roam

Don't believe in Beatles, I don't believe in rock
I don't believe in the cutting edge, that's just journalist talk
I don't believe in the cover story or even the gospel charts
'Cause you can easily hit number one with a bullet and totally miss the heart
But I, yes I, I believe in God
I don't believe in politics while the masses stay unfed
Until the leaders change priorities and supply the poor with bread
I don't believe in revolution or the empty words of peace
'Cause you can tear all of the governments down, then you still won't find release
But I, yes I, I believe in God
Oh ye-ah
[Imitates guitar solo]
I don't believe in
I don't usually sing this verse but I'll, I'll sing it. You guys'll probably understand [Spoken]
I don't believe in Esperanto
Should I stop now? 'Kay [Spoken]
I don't believe in Esperanto or the dreams of Babylon
If we all spoke the same language, long ago we mighta built the bomb
I don't believe the Aryans are the master race
And if they think that Jesus was white they'd be surprised to see his face
I yeah yeah, yes I, I believe in God
I don't believe in evolution, I was born to be free
Ain't gonna let no palaeontologist make a monkey outta me
I don't believe the devil's lies, ain't gonna be his slave
When I'm finished dying I'm gonna bust out of my grave
I, yes I, I believe in God
I believe in God
Thank you [Spoken]

the great american novel
[Go to Song Page]
I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free
In a land that poured its love out on the moon
And I grew up in the shadows
Of your silos filled with grain
But you never helped to fill my empty spoon
And when I was ten you murdered law
With courtroom politics
And you learned to make a lie sound just like truth
But I know you better now
And I don't fall for all your tricks
And you've lost the one advantage of my youth
You kill a black man at midnight
Just for talking to your daughter
Then you make his wife your mistress
And you leave her without water
And the sheet you wear upon your face
Is the sheet your children sleep on
At every meal you say a prayer
You don't believe but still you keep on
And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You were far across the ocean
But the war was not your own
And while you were winning theirs
You almost lost the war at home
Did you really think the only way
To bring about true peace
Was to sacrifice your young men
To kill all your enemies
Your politicians all make speeches
And your news men all take notes
And they exaggerate false issues
As they shove them down our throats
Is it really up to men
Whether our nation sink or float
Well I wonder who would lead us
If none of us would vote
My phone is tapped, my lips are chapped
From whispering through the fence
You know every move I make
Or is that just coincidence
Will you try to make my way of life
A little less like jail
If I promise to make tapes and slides
And send them through the mail
And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You say all men are equal, all men are brothers
Then why are the rich more equal than others
Don't ask me for the answers, I've only found one
That a man leaves his darkness when he follows the son

I Am Is
[Go to Song Page]
[This is a poem, entirely spoken and without musical accompaniment]
The galaxies in splendour
Stretch out before my eyes
And Jesus is not dead man
He is ris'
He is way cool and the heat of hell
Won't incinerate your soul
If you know that
I Am is
The earth and moon and planets
Wind their way around the sun
Most men lead lives of desperate, total mis'
'Cause the prince of darkness
Buffets them with lies and fury foul
Even he knows
I Am is
Time and space and matter
Weave the canvas of the world
It's all created by his hands babe
That's his bus'
He binds the protons and the neutrons
With electrons and the quarks
It all says
I Am is
Thank you. Yeah, you'll probably never hear that on a record. Yeah [Spoken]

love is the reason
[Go to Song Page]
The night was falling like a velvet curtain
I felt so drowsy as I watched the screen
Thought I saw something but I wasn't certain
On display
I heard a signal from the stratosphere
Could this be contact from a higher plane
And then a message which came through so clear
All the way, all the way
Oh oh oh oh love is the reason
Oh oh oh oh love is the light
Oh oh oh oh now is the season
Oh oh oh oh let's get it right
There was an alien who came among them
He told them things they'd never heard before
They were afraid and so they nailed and hung him
Now he's gone, now he's gone
Oh oh oh oh love is the reason
Oh oh oh oh love is the light
Oh oh oh oh now is the season
Oh oh oh oh let's get it right
No one can stop the endless revolution
The one he started overturns the throne
Of every kingdom, every institution
On and on, on and on
Oh woh oh oh oh oh love is the reason
Oh oh oh oh love is the light
Oh oh oh oh now is the season
Oh oh oh oh let's get it right
I'm getting ready before armageddon
Don't wanna miss the chance to spread the word
I wanna tell them where the world is heading
Have you heard, oh have you heard
Oh oh oh oh love is the reason
Oh oh oh oh love is the light

Feed the poor
They're dying every day

the outlaw
[Go to Song Page]
Some say he was an outlaw
That he roamed across the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few young fishermen
No one knew just where he came from
Or exactly what he'd done
But they said it might be something bad
That keeps them on the run
Some say he was a poet
That he'd stand upon the hill
And his words could calm an angry crowd
Or make the waves stand still
And he spoke in many parables
That few could understand
But the people sat for hours
Just to listen to this man
Some say he was a sorcerer
A man of mystery
He could walk upon the water
He could make a blind man see
And he conjured wine at weddings
And did tricks with fish and bread
He spoke of being born again
He raised people from the dead
La la la da da da
Ah la la la la da da
Da da da
Some say he was a radical
He talked of being free
He was followed by the masses
On the shores of Galilee
He spoke out against corruption
And he bowed to no decree
They feared his strength and power
So they nailed him to a tree
Some say he was the son of God
A man above all men
But he came to be a servant
And to set us free from sin
And that's who I believe he was
'Cause that's who I believe
And I think we should be ready
When it's time for us to leave
And I think we should get ready
'Cause it's almost time to leave
Some say he was an outlaw
That he roamed across the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few young fishermen
No one knew just where he came from
Or exactly what he'd done
But they said it might be something bad

if i were a singer
[Go to Song Page]
If I were a singer I would sing my songs for you
And my pen would write down all the truth you're made of
The only songs that I would sing would be about your love
Oh oh oh
If I were the blue sky my winds would blow for you
And I'd rain upon the earth with heavy showers
And I would rage with hurricanes to make men cower
Make them look up and watch 'til that unexpected hour
When you come again from heaven's hidden tower
Oh oh oh
These are troubled days
I want to live my life in some special way
These are troubled days
I want to give my life to you and show your way
If I were a singer I would sing my songs for you
My pen would write down all the truth you're made of
And the only songs that I would sing would be about your love
I would sing it 'til the faithless ones believed it
And the children of your wayward church received it
I would sing it to the governments and leaders
To the writers who have misled all the readers
I would sing it though they jailed me and they killed me
Let them empty me of life for you have filled me
You have filled me
If I were a singer I would sing my songs for you
And my pen would write down all the truth you're made of
The only songs that I would sing would be about your love
Oh oh oh

And the children of your wayward church received it
I would sing it to the governments and leaders
To the writers who have misled all the readers
I would sing it though they jailed me and they killed me
Let them empty me of life for you have filled me
You have filled me
problems with rock and roll
I've had a lot of problems with rock and roll during my life. Not the kind of problems you've had, like when you got saved you had to figure where were you gonna burn your records. No, I've had problems with rock and roll with people eh, not eh thinking I'm a christian you know because I sang these kinda songs. And em there's rumours that went around, people said I, you know, had fallen away from God if I ever was a christian, and I took drugs an' just a lot of stuff an' eh, I was really upset to hear these things and I asked around and I eh found out it's not true.
I went over to England in 1972 and by that time I had done three albums on Capitol Records and em, I'd signed with MGM and done Only Visiting This Planet. I went over to. Oh I broke my finger one time and I used to hold it up after singing songs 'cause it felt better to have the blood running down, and I also had read this bible verse that said lift your body up as a living sacrifice to God an', I just used to, I, I didn't like applause, you know, an' eh, and all the noise eh that sometimes goes on with people talking and stuff. I just, I didn't wanna like say thank you thank you very much, hey thank you very much. You know so I just would just like look up at my, my hand and say my finger hurts so bad God, is it ever gonna stop hurting?
And I'm willing to die for you, I willing to lift my body up as a living sacrifice. You already took my finger, you can have the rest of me if you want. I mean, you know, I know rock and roll isn't the way. These people really are into this music but this is not really important and you know, you're the way, you're the only way you know. And eh little by little people in, in LA had stopped ah, applauding and they would just hold up their hand too, and I just liked the silence a lot better. I liked a lot of things back then better than I do now. I mean there's a lot of bands out now and there's a lot of good messages. I just kinda, sometimes I just think about it, you know I kinda liked it better when I was the only one.
Anyway um, from 1956, when I started writing and singing these songs to 1971, that's about fifteen years, I get, I just got tired of discussing this with people. You know and they'd, and they'd say well also your hair you know, the bible says. And I'd say I know, it says does not nature teach you that for a man to have long hair is a shame. But a woman's hair is given to her for her glory, it is her covering. And they'd say yeah. And I'd say yeah, eh my hair is not long. It's just today women cut their hair so short it makes my hair look long.
You know the only people that cut their hair short back in, in the time of Jesus were soldiers, so, I guess so their helmets would fit better and they wouldn't have hair in their eyes when they're trying to kill people. You know I don't wanna look like a soldier, I wanna look like Jesus. I just wanna be like Jesus, I don't wanna be like the church. And we are the church. You're the church. I don't wanna be like you. And I don't want you to be like me, I want us to be like Jesus. I'm too much me, you're too much you. Get over it.
So I finally wrote this song just so I wouldn't have to discuss it anymore.

[Spoken]
why should the devil have all the good music
[Go to Song Page]
I want the people to know
That he saved my soul
And I still like to listen to the radio
Hey you guys shouldn't clap, 'cause you're white you know [Spoken]
I want the people to know
That he saved my soul
But I still like to listen to the radio
They say rock and roll is wrong
We'll give you one more chance
I say I feel so good I'm gonna get up and dance
Ah you think I'm joking. You guys are clapping on the o', on the on beat anyway. And, it's not attractive. You need more soul [Spoken]
They say to cut my hair
They're driving me insane
I grew it out long to make room for my brain
That works [Spoken]
But sometimes people don't understand
They say what's a good boy doing in a rock and roll band
There's nothing
I could just sing another song [Spoken]
There's nothing wrong with playing blues licks
All I'm really trying to say is
Why should the devil have all the good music
There's nothing wrong with what I play, aaaah
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
Yes he did, alright
[Imitates guitar solo]
I'm not knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that has a beat
I'm not knocking the hymns
Just give me something that moves my feet
I don't like some of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet
I still ain't [Spoken]
Jesus told the truth
Jesus showed the way
There's one more thing I'd like to say
They nailed him to the cross
And they laid him in the ground
But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down
I feel good every day
And I don't wanna lose it
All I'm really trying to say is
Why should the devil have all the good music
I've been blessed in every way
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Jesus is the rock, he rolled my blues
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away, yeah oh ah oh oh ah wow-ow
I want the people to know

reader's digest
[Go to Song Page]
Alice Cooper is a drag queen
But now he's a christian so eh, I wrote this song a long time ago [Spoken]
Alice Cooper is a drag queen
Bowie's somewhere in between
Other bands're looking mean
Me, I'm trying to stay clean
I don't like the radio
I hate what the charts pick
Rock and roll may not be dead
But it's really sick
All over the world disc jockeys talk the same
Every town I play is like the town from where I came
Except for this town
I always say that. This time I mean it [Spoken]
The Rolling Stones are millionaires
Flower children pallbearers
Beatles said all you need is love
Then they broke up
I'll never break up
Jimi Hendrix took an overdose
Joplin followed so close
The whole music scene and
All the bands are pretty comatose
This time last year, people didn't wanna hear
They looked at Jesus from afar
Now they call him superstar
Well it's 1973, I wonder who we're gonna see
Who's in power now
Think I'll turn on the TV
The man on the news said
China's gonna beat us
We shot all our dreamers
There's no one left to lead us
We need a solution, some kind of salvation
Let's send some people to the moon
And gather information
They brought back a big bag of rocks
Only cost two hundred forty seven billion
Must be nice rocks
Well you think it's such a sad thing
When you see a fallen king
Martin Luther King. Rodney. Don. Prince Charles. No [Spoken]
You think it's such a sad thing
When you see a fallen king
Then you find out they're only princes to begin with
Everybody's got to choose
Whether they will win or lose
Follow God or sing the blues
And who they're gonna sin with
What a mess the world is in
I wonder who began it
Don't ask me, I'm only visiting this planet
This world is not my home
And this is not rap
Alice Cooper is a drag queen

break
I think I'm gonna take a, a break for about fifteen or twenty minutes and then come back and play piano and, and em. Sorry just ki', I'm kind of dizzy up here. Is, is it hot in here or is it just me? It's hot? Maybe you can open up some windows with some chairs. Ugh [Spoken]
dance before the throne
[Go to Song Page]
[Coughs]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving, it won't satisfy your soul
When you're down, go off on your own
'Cause when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Yeah see em, in Sunday school they said that dancing was wrong but then, then we had this story about David dancing before God. Oh you've heard of David? So it was confusing you know, it, it, um, the church where I grew up ah, eh, in, eh, was, I dunno, they said a lotta things like it's wrong to drink and eh, you know and then in Sunday school they taught us that Jesus changed the water into wine. And I thought well maybe he turned it back into water before it hit their stomachs. I just, I didn't know, I was confused. You know they said it was wrong to go to the movies, but on, on eh, on television we could watch the movies. Why was it wrong to go to the movies? But hey would, when I was, at that age we didn't even have television, it hadn't been introduced to the market yet so eh, I just thought [coughs] it's wrong to go to the movies. I don't understand why but then, you know, I thought, at one point I thought well maybe that's why they call it cinema, so you'll know. So I didn't see anything wrong with dancing but I just, I would go into my room and dance because I didn't want anybody to think I wasn't a christian. [Spoken]
The people at my church, my friends down at the school
Sometimes they think I'm crazy, I guess they think that I'm a fool
But I believe someone rolled away that stone
When I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone
I have got the Lord, I am not alone
If you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
'Cause God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
I learned that in Sunday school too [Spoken]
Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in his sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world
My neighbourhood, most of the kids were black. I was white. Well we were poor, we lived in a slum. Wasn't until years later my dad earned enough money we could move into a white ghetto. This eh coloured kid one time asked me are you an albino? I thought am I an albino? And I told him no I'm a Norman, we live on the corner [Spoken]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
Moving and a grooving, doesn't satisfy your soul
If you're down, I go off on my own

talking to hannah
I see you've had a drink of water and I realise how dry my throat is. Eh, what's your name? Hannah? Ha-Hannah. Oh I like that. Ha. Do you understand what I'm saying tonight or am I talking too much? Too much? Yeah, I think so too but, there's no o-other way to say stuff besides talk. Unless you're a good dancer, can interpret emotion. A lot of eh, lot of, lot of da', you know that, that was something that came in in the sss, in the eh beginning of the seventies, christians wanted to be free so they'd be dancing around and, and insisting that this is from God. And, which it mighta been, I, I dunno what he was saying to them.
And there was always the debate about well how, how, what does God allow you know, how much can you do? I mean eh, and then people were saying I'm gonna reclaim poetry, you know like it had ever gone away.
So it's kinda interesting for me just to look round and not be singing. 'Cause I can't always remember the words. That's why I have so many papers up here. And I'm getting old you know, I mean I, I'm, I don't have that, that eh, that old timer's disease. I, I don't have that. I might be getting it, eh for Christmas. A-and, and eh I'm still a good driver, I don't have any accidents. Lot of people behind me have accidents.
Mama killed a chicken, she thought it was a duck [Sung]
I'm singing this song for you Hannah. It's a song about a, a chicken and a ducky, okay. Did you ever hear that, that eh Charlie Brown story about Linus and Lucy and Charlie Brown, you know him? They were laying down on a field and eh, and Linus said do you, do you notice how sometimes clouds look like things, like eh, see that, that group of clouds over there, that looks like Sir Thomas Eakins, the early American painter. See he's working there at his easel. You see anything Lucy? Lucy says yeah, kinda looks like Betsy Ross, you know sowing the flag, like you can see the flag draped across her knees and her hands up in the air with a kind of a needle there. Do you say anything Charlie Brown? Well I was gonna say that I saw a ducky and a horsey but I changed my mind.
What does that mean? I'll tell you afterwards [Spoken]

watch what you're doing
[Go to Song page]
Mama killed a chicken, she thought it was a duck
She put it on the table with its legs sticking up
Papa broke his glasses when he fell down drunk
Tried to drown the kitty cat, turned out to be a skunk
You gotta watch what you're doing
Don't you know
You gotta watch what you're doing
Oh oh oh ah ah oh
I knew a girl, she was sweet as could be
But she fell for this man like a chain sawed tree
She listened to his lies, she was fooled by his charms
Now she's sitting with a baby in her arms
You gotta watch what you're doing
Yeah
Ow ah ah
You gotta watch what you're doing
Yeah
Ow ah ah-ah
You gotta watch what you're doing
Wo oh oh-oh-ah-mm
Everything's fine till things get bad
Then you sit around talking 'bout the good times you had
It ain't no good to lead a life of sin
If you don't walk straight you know you can't get in
You gotta watch what you're doing
'Cause he does
You know he watches what we're doing
And he loves us
Still he watches
Yet he loves us
Huh
Some people smile, they seem alright
You later find out they've got real problems in their life
You should love everybody but don't be blind
Some kinda people they can mess up your mind
Watch what you're doing
Watch out who you hang around with
Watch out who you fall in love with
Watch out who you, you marry
I know what I'm talking about
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah ye-eh-eh
Some people say that God is dead
That he doesn't exist except inside your head
I wonder how many gonna be surprised
When they look straight up and see him coming through the skies
You gotta watch out
Watch what you're doing
Yeah yeah yeah
You gotta know where you're going
Do you know where you're going
Wo yo yeah yeah yeah
You gotta watch what you're doing
Wo-oh-oh-oh-oh-ah-ah-ah-ah-um
There's someone after you
You may not think it's true
But he's called the devil
And he wants to lock you up in a zoo
He's got a nice cage picked out just for you
Oh he thinks it'll fit real nice too
You gotta watch what you
Watch what you're doing
You gotta-eh know where you're going
You gotta watch what you're doing
Wo oh wah-oh-oh
You gotta watch what you're doing-aaaah

[Go to Song Page]
Life was filled with guns and war
Everyone got trampled on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold
A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come, 'n' you've been left behind
A man and wife asleep in bed
She hears a noise and turns her head, he's gone
I wish we'd all been ready
Two men walking up a hill
One disappears, one's left standing still
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
La la
Life is filled with bombs and guns
Heaven help the little ones who die
I hope they'll all be ready
People, gold, oil, guns, wars, AIDS
I hope you'll all be ready
'Cause there won't be time to change your mind
And no excuse for being blind
The clouds will open up, Jesus will come down
Those who believe in him will go home
And those who don't believe will be left behind
Don't get left behind [x3]
Life was filled with guns and war
Everyone got trampled on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold

There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
La la
Life is filled with bombs and guns
Heaven help the little ones who die
I hope they'll all be ready
People, gold, oil, guns, wars, AIDS
I hope you'll all be ready
'Cause there won't be time to change your mind
And no excuse for being blind
The clouds will open up, Jesus will come down
Those who believe in him will go home
And those who don't believe will be left behind
Don't get left behind [x3]
protect my child
[Go to Song Page]
I've got no throne and no connections
I've always wanted it to be this way
You've got the power and the resurrection
I'm getting ready for the judgement day
Gentle Jesus, mercy mild
Heaven help me protect my child
Protect my child
Set him free
Give him refuge
And liberty
Soften the pain
And stop the fear
We're all prisoners in this world
'Til you come back and get us out of here
He's growing up in a world divided
I never thought that it would be like this
Long before the stars collided
He had the lullabies and goodnight kiss
Comets are falling, the night is wild
Mercy mercy, protect my child
Protect my child
Give him, make him strong
Give him courage
To sing his song
Keep him in sight
And hold him near
We're all prisoners in this world
'Til you come back and let us out of here-ya
Divine distraction, holy commotion
Sometimes the truth gets in your face
Instead of drowning in the fiery ocean
Get your feet up on a higher place
I'm living righteous 'til the dirt gets piled
And on my headstone write protect my child
Protect my child
Give him light
Give him strength
To do what's right
Guide his steps
Brush away his tears
We're all prisoners in this place

When you first begin your journey
You're not sure of who you are
And the lessons that you're learning
They don't seem to take you far
And you just can't keep from stumbling
Though you try so hard to stand
And the truth can be so humbling
When it's just beyond your hand
As though youth were my invention
As though love lay undefined
To stay free was my intention
To stay young and unconfined
And so I held my pride above you
Oh yes, what a fool was I
Holding back those words God loves you
And letting out that word goodbye
I was wrong to let you go
I was a child and I did not know about the love
That we both could have given
And now you're gone so far away
I hope I'll see you again someday
But if I don't, I hope I'll see you in heaven
Ah ah ha
Ah ha ha
Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah
I've been sitting in this garden
In the middle of my day
And my memories fade and harden
As the years they slip away
An' I've been looking in this mirror
At the age around my eyes
Time is such an earnest labourer
Precision is its neighbour
Lay my body in the ground
But let my spirit touch the skies
And I was wrong to let you go
I was a child and I did not know about the love
That we both could have, should have given
And now you’re gone, you're gone so far away
I hope I'll see you again someday
But if I don't, I hope I'll see you in heaven
If I don't, I hope I'll see you in heaven
Well if I don't, I hope I'll see you in heaven
When you first begin your journey
You're not sure of who you are
And the lessons that you're learning
They don't seem to take you far
And you just can't keep from stumbling

a few loaves and smelly fish
I don't really remember what I was saying before or if I finished talking about it 'cause I started talking to Hannah, but 'em, I just wanted to encourage you to be free. That's all, just, just eh, if you can't do something then go ahead and do it, 'cause God is with you. That's it, you know. And 'em, maybe you think well I've only got a, you know, some small loaves and some smelly fish. That's enough for God, it's just that you're willing to offer what you do have.
My dad would never let me study music, you know, I don't know that many eh things to do with music, so my music is just eh, spare. But eh, spare and eh rich can be the same thing. I-If God wants to do something with your life, he can do it. Ah, ah, I, I just, sometimes I feel inadequate you know when I'm up on stage and I start thinking while I'm singing. And that's another reason I forget some words. [Laughs] I just think what are you doing? What are you doing up here, this, this guitar is as broken down as you are you know, the, the strings don't sing out clearly like they used to. Sometimes I'm wondering if you can even tell what chord it is. Maybe I'm just standing behind it and I can't hear it, you know, I don't know. Or maybe I'm going deaf, I dunno. Yeah. [Chuckles]
Em eh, I just wanna encourage you that's all, I don't really know how to, I don't know who you are, I don't know what you're like. I, I sometimes don't know what I'm like. I'm just a person failing upwards toward heaven and really glad that God loves me. So I'll, I, I, I can't really think, sometimes when I can't think I imagine that maybe God wants me to do something else. So eh, I'm not really on drugs. And I'm not really concerned, even though I say I'm really sorry, I'm not. I'm not really concerned with what anybody might think is going on with me or I'm not really bothered when I miss a, a chord or a lyric or anything because I think that life should be lived. I don't think that we should pretend toward excellence. I don't think the God requires excellence from us, I think he requires honesty. And, and, if you're living your life to prove something to other people or, or they're, you think they're watching you, you must be miserable. It's just better to be a, a slob. Just be, just be a loser like the apostles. They did okay, you know.

diamonds / one way
[Go to Song Page]
[Go to Song Page]
You can take your diamonds and lock them in your room
And you will lose everything you save
You can take your flowers and lay them at his tomb
But I know he rose up from the grave
One way, one way to heaven
Hold your fingers high
One way, free and forgiven
You will be children of the sky
Two roads diverged in the middle of my life
I heard the poet say
I took the road less traveled by
And that's made the difference every night and every day
One way, one way to heaven
Hold up high your hands
Follow, free and forgiven
You can be children of the lamb
In your youth you mighta known the truth
But then spent many years just going down the wrong track
Now that you're older you should be bolder
I think it's time that you were going back
Going back
One way, one way to heaven
Hold your hands up high
Follow, you know it's free and forgiven
You can be children of the sky
Children of the sky

I've been knocked down, talked
You ever thought of nailing this pedal down? [Spoken]
I've been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame
Well here I am, talking 'bout Jesus just the same
I've been knocked down, whatever whatever
Ah la la la la
Well here I am, talking 'bout Jesus just the same
Wo oh oh oh
You wanna talk about my life, well listen to me
You got your facts all backwards, one two three
Spreading rumors and gossip is a real bad game
The only name to spread is Jesus name
I've been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame
Well here I am, talking 'bout Jesus brother
Here I am, talking 'bout Jesus sister
Here I am, talking 'bout Jesus just the same
Wo oh oh wo

reaching the Beat Generation
It was easy to sing to my friends at school you know, 'em, I'm, I'm, I'm gonna sing a song now that I didn't write for my friends. I wrote it for somebody I don't know. 'Cause when I signed with Capitol Records, it was 1966 and the eh Beat Generation, the Bohemian sub culture in San Francisco was starting to emerge right across the street from where I had grown up, in this place Haight Ashbury. And the press called them hippies after a while 'cause they were hip, you know. Usually if a jazz musician or a bohemian said are you hip it meant did you have drugs on you. Mighta meant did you have drugs, you know in your pocket, like on your hip. I don't know where it came from but, but the hippies were taking drugs and being what they called turned on by eh adult eh drop outs and, I didn't know these people. I mean they lived in my neighbourhood, but they moved there. They didn't live there all, all the time.
And eh, so anyway I wrote some really, eh awful songs, like this one. I was hoping I could reach them with songs like this.

when you sent your son
[Go to Song Page]
I had a baby outta wedlock
Her old man got me in a headlock
I was an unwed father
But don't bother feeling sorry for me
I took a lot of LSD
I smoked a lotta mar-ja-weenie
But it did not help me
It did not set me free
Jesus, why'd you go and do it
Why’d you help someone like me
You saved me, you forgave me
And I know you set me free
You took away my problems
One by one
I guess you knew what you were doing
When you sent your son
You know the way that I was living
It was like taking without giving
And I hurt a lot of people
And I lost my friends
I spent a little time in prison
But I know the Lord is risen
And I'll never need
To be locked up again
Oh Jesus, why'd you go and do it
Wo-oh why’d you help someone like me
Saved me, you forgave me
And I know you set me free
You took away my problems
One by one

[Go to Song Page]
No more LSD for me, I met the man from Galilee
They stole his duds and shed his blood
But he rose up from the mud
Sing a song that'll set you free
Sing a song of calvary
And you'll be happy like I am
If you'll be washed in the blood of the lamb
Take a chance with Jesus, do yourself a favour
Let him change your life, let him be your saviour
Take a chance with Jesus
Wo oh wo oh oh
God don't shove but the true love comes from above
Sing a song that'll set you free
Well sing a song of calvary
And you'll be happy like I am
If you be washed in the blood of the lamb
And I shoulda just stopped right there but I put this ending on it [Spoken]

a note from mr god
[Go to Song Page]
I was so down
Just hanging around
Wondering what to do
Suddenly I was surprised from out of the blue
The birds sang their song as I walked along
I suddenly felt quite odd
‘Cause out of the sky fell a note from Mr God
And it said
You got the blues but you can shake it
If you have faith you can make it
You got a chance
You must take it while you can
Don't give up hope, never lose it
You got a choice but you must choose it
And that's what it says on this note from Mr God
Ah da la la [ETC]
It wasn't really a note from, I can't remember all the words to this but it wasn't a note from God. It was eh, it was just a piece of paper somebody'd dropped out of their bible on the way to church. But eh you know how it is when you read something and it really means something to you an', and eh you wanna, you know, you believe it and you wanna share it and so this guy eh, thought it was a note from God 'cause he thought who else could know me this well, it must be a, a note from God. And it wasn't. But he thought it was an', and it wasn't. But he thought it was. So he ran off to tell all of his friends what he had learned. He said [Spoken, over continued music]

You must take it while you can
Don't give up hope, never lose it
Brothers, you got a choice but you gots to choose it

Says that right here on this note from Mr God
So if you feel down
With your chin on the ground
And suddenly you feel odd
Well then just look all around, look down on the ground, you might see a piece of paper floating by just could be a note from Mr

strong love
[Go to Song Page]
Backstage, I cross the middle ground
Curtain up and house lights down
I sing these love songs, I try to pass my heart around
And afterwards
Someone might say they thought I tried to put them down
They feel so bad
It does not matter what I say
I hope tomorrow they have a better day
They seem so trapped
They need release
They need your strong love and your strange peace
Reporters question me, is this a good direction for the young
How lamb like their faces
But how snake like their tongues
They quote me perfectly
Then rewrite every word I speak
And go away and say we're just some Jesus freaks
I feel so good inside
It doesn't matter what they say
I hope tomorrow they have a better day
We're all so lost
We need release
We need your strong love and your strange peace
Please give us your strong love and your strange peace
We need your strong love and your strange peace

love on haight street
[Go to Song Page]
People come from everywhere
To find the love they need
They come for love on Haight Street
And the people here
All share their love with others that they meet
There's lots of love on Haight Street
Love, love, love, that’s what everybody’s looking for
Love, love, love, and a baby we got it
Love, love, love, that’s what everybody’s looking for
Love, love, love, we've got it
But the people there share their drugs
With others that they meet
There was too much love on Haight Street
People came from everywhere
To grind the love they needed
They came for love on Haight Street
There was lotsa drugs on Haight Street
They need your strong love and strange peace
Your strong love and strange peace
People come from everywhere
To find the love they need
They come for love on Haight Street
And the people here
All share their love with others that they meet

[Go to Song Page]
I was alone and without love
Hope was fading fast
Slipping right on past
Then by some grand design
She came along and heard my song
And sang the harmony
She was right on key
And she was right on time
I am hers, she is mine
We sing together now
She knows the words somehow
An' I love her true
And we sing the tune
I was alone and without love
Hope was fading fast
Slipping right on past
Then by some grand design
She came along and heard my song
And sang the harmony
She was right on key
And she was right on time
I am hers, she is mine
We sing together now
She knows the words somehow
An' I love her true
And we sing the tune
if the bombs fall
[Go to Song Page]
If the bombs fall, I love you
If they end it all, I'll still love you
Through it all, I just want you to know I love you
Acid rain is falling from the sky
And a dark red cloud hangs up on high
I don’t want our love to end this way
What about the songs we haven’t sung
What about the things we haven’t done
What’s the matter with this world today
Well if the bombs fall, I love you
If they end it all, I'll still love you
Through it all, I just want you to know I love you
And through the years and all the long hard miles
We’ll shed some tears but we will share the smiles
Don’t cry, I just want you to know I love you
If the bombs fall, I love you
If they end it all, I'll still love you
Through it all, I just want you to know I love you
Acid rain is falling from the sky
And a dark red cloud hangs up on high

what has god
I just thought I'd sing some love songs 'cause eh, I had this girl come up to me once and say what were you singing those love songs for, what's that got to do with God? At the time I didn't have a good answer for her, 'cause I didn't know that God was love, I just knew that love is important to people, love's important to everyone [Spoken]
endless life of dreams
[Go to Song Page]
If you were the mother of my children
If you were the woman in my bed
If you were the wife that I could cherish
And the lover I clothed and fed
If you were the one that I could talk to
If you were the girl I call my own
You would be the one that I belong to
And I wouldn't have to live alone
But you're not a woman I've held and kissed
And in truth you probably don't even exist
And as real as all this sometimes seems
You're just an endless life of dreams
I'm afraid it's just an endless life of dreams
You have been the focus of my passion
And I've always felt
The reason I wrote this is because some of you oh don't, you know aren't married but you have in mind somebody out there and, and you're, you're saving your life to share with them [Spoken]
You have been the focus of my passion
And I've always felt you might be near
You have been the art and film and fashion
Of the music that I hear
You have been the fragrance in my garden
Always there beyond my fingertips
And sometimes I imagine that I hear you
Maybe we keep passing like two ships
And you're not a woman I've held and kissed
And in truth you probably don't exist
And as real as all this sometimes seems
I'm afraid its just an endless life of dreams
[Imitates drum break]
To breathe and to live, to grow and to give
To dream and to cry, to hope and to die
The mysteries of God, the sorrows of time
Life is a complicated love song with an uncompleted rhyme
I can see my life stretched out before me
It's a road that leads to you
You have been the reason that I'm waiting
And my purpose has stayed true
No one understands the strength you give me
No one would believe that you are real
It doesn't really matter if I find you
I alone know what I feel
But you're not a woman I've held and kissed
And in truth you might not even exist
And as real as all this sometimes seems
I'm afraid its just an endless life o' dreams
If you were the mother of my children
If you were the woman in my bed
If you were the wife that I could cherish
And the lover I clothed and fed
If you were the one that I could talk to
If you were the girl I call my own
You would be the one that I belong to
And I wouldn't have to live alone
But you're not a woman I've held and kissed
And in truth you probably don't even exist
And as real as all this sometimes seems
You're just an endless life of dreams
I'm afraid it's just an endless life of dreams

love and heaven
I think of girls you know like in college, I try not to think of 'em in high school wanting to go out with boys and fall in love and get married but. You know, and there's so many jerks around, there's just so many terrible guys, I mean they're just not human beings yet, you know. Maybe girls are ahead of us, you know, maybe girls are just advanced and, and, and they just have to wait for us to mellow or ripen or rot or something you know.
Um, you know when it comes to love, ah, it's like every, when you're married every day the rules change. And, and eh, only wife knows what the rules are. And she's not gonna tell you, you're gonna have to guess. And you might think something's wrong and say are you okay, and she'll say a-ha. And that means no. So girls, be kind to us, you know. I mean we may be the head of the household, but we're stupid. We're doing the best we can, sometimes. So in matters of the heart be kind to one another, love one another. Bible says confess your sins one to another and be tender hearted and forgive each other. Practice it you know. Bible says confess your sins, don't confess hers. You know just, just if you do, maybe it's both your fault 'cause sometimes that happens, sometimes it's not your fault, I, you know. Eh so just say I'm really, just say your part like, you know, I'm really sorry I screamed at you this morning, and then just stop. You know let her take a few hours and then she can come back to you and say okay I'm, I'm sorry I, I drove the car over your foot.
That's how to love one another, just be nice. The bible says that without knowledge the people suffer and eh, I know that's true in my life, not having knowledge of God the father made me suffer for years. Without knowing what love is we can cause consternation for the other person and frustration for ourselves. A lot of things that we're taught are incorrect. I have to say that the church I grew up in introduced me to Christ and encouraged me to, to talk to other people about him. But a lot of things they taught weren't true, I later found out. I had to forget a lot of what I had learned.
Some people say that if you're good you'll go to heaven and if you're bad you go to hell, and that's not true. Ah no one has ever gone to hell because they were bad. The way you get into hell is, I think, you spend your life running away from God and you end up in hell because you didn't wanna go to heaven. And you can't get into heaven by being good. But you, if you follow God he will lead you, eh to his kingdom. That's how you get into heaven. And I think if people knew the truth about God's love and his mercy they might feel different about him, not thinking that he is judgemental and keeping a list of all the wrongs you've made, but to know that he loves you. And he notices everything because he knows everything, but that's not principally what he's interested in. He loves you and he wants you to, to experience his love with him.
If you don't know really eh something about God you should ask him. Don't canvas, don't take a poll, don't talk to people and ask their opinion, just, you could read the bible and you can't understand what you looking for, can't find it, eh talk to God, just ask him. You know, maybe you don't even know if he is real, so ask him that. That's a good place to start, just say eh are you real? You know, uh, do you exist? Are you there? Because I, I'm here and I wanna know the truth and I don't want to believe a lie, I don't want to get trapped in a religion that's not honestly eh real but if you show me what's right I will accept it, I will believe it. I'll try whatever I need to, em if Jesus is the door I'll open that door. If Jesus is the only bridge I'll cross the bridge. I just wanna know what's real. I wanna know if you're there. If you did create the universe then you have power and you must have enough power to talk to me if you're there and I'm here. And just ask God, pray, ask God what you want, what you need, what you lack.
If you're not a christian you really should become one, you should follow Christ. Read what he said and follow him, in truth and in spirit follow him and be honest about your life. Confess to him what you need to have removed from your life, for things you've done, your habits, sins, obsessions, you don't need those things. The reason you are where you're at right now and don't like where you are right now is because of the things in your life that need to be removed. So ask God to, you know, reach inside of your, your essence, your, your heart, your mind and remove these things and to fill up that empty space that, that he makes with, with heaven. Pour out the earth, all the worldly things that you've accumulated. You don't need those, they hurt you. And just walk and be free, walk, walk in, in, in the light that God shows you. The bible says if a man walks in the light he's been given then God will also give more light. So God can lead you, he can show you were put your foot next. If you're tired of running away and you don't like where you're at then you don't need to be there anymore.
And I'd like to pray with you so that you can escape this place that you've arrived at. God [clears throat] we all need to grow toward the truth, so help us right now. People aren't christians I pray right that they would confess to you their sins and they would say God I'm sorry for eh some of the things I've, I've done that I know are wrong and maybe there's other things I've done that are wrong that I don't know what those are but if you show me I'm sorry for those too. I don't want to be this way, help me God, take away my sins, help me to lose these addictions and these emotional entanglements. Set me free. Send Jesus into my life, into my mind so that I can understand you, into my heart so I can feel you and know you're real. I want to come to a place where I, I know about you. And if I fall down help me, help me God, help me get back up, and, and eh baptise me in water and baptise me in Jesus' blood. Baptise me in truth and in, in your peace and lead me to the rest of my life. I will follow you if you will guide me. In Jesus' name I'm asking this. I can't do it but I believe you can. Amen.
I was told that faith is when you really know that God's gonna do something, and the bible doesn't say that. I mean d', do you have faith that eh if I let go of these lyrics they'll go down, do you have faith that that'll happen? You don't need faith 'cause you know about gravity. The bible says that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. You don't know that God is there. You hope that he is. That's faith, that's the beginning of, of the wisdom, that's the beginning of the life. I hope you're there God, I believe that you are. I don't, I don't know, but I have faith because I hope. I can't see you. The substance of your world is invisible to me but I have faith because I hope that I am really serious when I say I wanna be a christian. I hope that I will follow you, I hope that, that my life will go in a new direction.
I don't know how you, you feel about your life. Like I was thinking about before, the, you know the core of, of John Lennon trying to figure out God and the world around him, and having christians attack him all the time, and then writing imagine there's no heaven, it's easy if you try. I think he wanted to push away the, the religious abuse he was receiving. He said that he was seeking truth, he wrote songs about that, all I want is the truth. I hope that he found it when he was reading the bible. I hope that he found it and I hope that he believed, and I hope he reached out to God before that boy reached out to him with a gun. I have faith that God is just and fair. I don't know what the circumstances of your life are. I don't know if your father's aggressive towards you or your mother's passive or, or if you're a, a negative, critical, eh, corrupt individual even as a christian. I don't know. But I felt like this before and maybe you feel this way now.

i am a servant
[Go to Song Page]
I am a servant, I am listening for my name
I sit here waiting, I've been looking at this game
That I've been playing, an' I've been staying much the same
When I am lonely, I'm the only one to blame
I am a servant, I am listening for your call
I've been unfaithful and now I sit here in this hall
How can you use me when I've never given all
How can you choose me when you know I'll quickly fall
You touch my soul, you help me grow
You let me know you love me
I might feel worthless now, but help me make the vow
And humbly bow before thee
Oh please use me, I am lonely
I am a servant, getting ready for my part
There's been a change, a rearrangement in my heart
At last I'm learning there's no returning once I start
To live's a privilege, to love is such an art
But I need your help to start
Oh please purify my heart
I am your servant
I am your servant
Goodnight, God bless you [Spoken]
