why don't you look into jesus
[Go to Song Page]
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup
You drown your sorrow till you can't stand up
Take a look at what you've done to yourself
Why don't you put the bottle back on the shelf
Yellow fingered from your cigarettes
Your hands are shaking while your body sweats
Why don't ya look into Jesus
He got the answer
Gonorrhea on Valentine's day
And you're still looking for the perfect lay
You think rock and roll will set you free
You'll be deaf before you're thirty three
You're shooting junk till you're half insane
Broken needle in your purple vein
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Sleep all night
Work all day
Take your money
Throw it all away
Say you're gonna be a superstar
But you never hung around enough
To find out who you really are
Think back to when you were a child
Your soul was free, your heart ran wild
Each day was different, life was a thrill
You knew tomorrow would be better still
But things have changed, you're much older now
If you're unhappy and you don't know how
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Yes he does
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer
You oughta check it for yourself
Look into Jesus
He got the answer
He's got the answer
Yes he does, yes he does
He's got the answer
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer
He's got the answer
Ye-yeah yeah yeah oh
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup

the rock that doesn't roll
[Go to Song Page]
I was lost and blind till a friend of mine
Came and took me by the hand
And he led me to his kingdom
That was in another land
Now I feel so blessed 'cause he gave me rest
I finally feel like I've passed the test
I wanna be like him, yes that's my goal
Like the rock that doesn't roll
Well he's the rock that doesn't roll
He's the rock that doesn't roll
You know he's good for the body, great for the soul
He's the rock that doesn't roll
I was all alone like a rolling stone
I was going nowhere fast
I was on the road so far from home
When my future touched my past
Now I feel so good just like I knew I would
He make everybody feel so good, so good
I wanna wowie zowie well the cat's got soul
He's the rock that doesn't roll
Well he's the rock that doesn't roll
He's the rock that doesn't roll
You know he's good for the body and he's great for the soul
He's the rock that doesn't roll
Ow ooh
I was all alone like a rolling stone

Rock that
You've got to rock me on the water
You've got to rock me in my grave
You've got to rock me till I'm feeling good
You've got to rock me till I'm, rock me till I'm saved
I wanna tell you
He's the rock that doesn't roll
You know he's good for the body, great for the soul

i've searched all around the world
[Go to Song Page]
Darkness can't hide much longer
The spirit is getting stronger
You keep the dance halls humming
But the end of the age is coming
I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth
I opened the mouth of love and I found a wisdom tooth
Maybe you think I'm plastic
But your situation's drastic
I'm glad my faith is stronger
This world won't last much longer
I've searched all around the world to find a place of peace
I've sat in the shade of God and I watched the joy increase
Wo oh wo-oh-oh
There's no time left for stalling
Can't you hear someone calling
Life all around is crumbling
I think this whole world is stumbling
And maybe you think I'm wrong now
But this is my only song
Well I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth
I opened the mouth of love and I found a wisdom tooth
Well I've searched all around, I've searched all around a place of peace
I've sat in the shade of God and I've watched the joy increase
Well I've searched all around, I've searched all around
I've searched all around the world
I've searched all around
I don't know what I'm gonna do
But I got no plans outside of you
I got no plans, I got no plans outside of you
Oh
I don't know what I'm [Very faintly]
Darkness can't hide much longer
The spirit is getting stronger
You keep the dance halls humming
But the end of the age is coming
I've searched all around the world to find a grain of truth
I opened the mouth of love and I found a wisdom tooth

watch what you're doing
[Go to Song Page]
Mama killed a chicken, she thought it was a duck
She put it on the table with its legs sticking up
Papa broke his glasses when he fell down drunk
Tried to drown the kitty cat, turned out to be a skunk
You gotta watch what you're doing
Oh don't you know
You gotta watch where you're going
Yeah
Little Joe Billy went fishing for trout
Played hooky from school till the cops found out
He never had a father, was an only child
And his mama never beat him so he grew up wild
You gotta watch what you're doing
Yeah
You gotta watch where you're going
So true
Well I knew a girl, she was sweet as could be
But she fell for a man like a chain sawed tree
She listened to his lies, was fooled by his charm
Now she's sitting with a baby in her arm
You gotta watch what you're doing
You oughta know that
You gotta watch where you're going
You gotta look out
You gotta watch out
Watch out
Yeah
[Larry imitates an instrument]
Some folks smile
Some folks smile
Some folks smile and they seem alright
Then later you find out it was an angel of light
You gotta love everybody but don't be blind
'Cause some kind of people try to mess up your mind
You gotta watch what you're doing 'cause you know watch what you're doing
Some folks smile and they seem alright
They say God is just a figment of imagination but well
I wonder how many gonna be surprised
When they look straight up and see him coming through the skies
You've gotta watch what you're doing
Oh do you know
You gotta watch where you're going
Don't you know
You gotta watch where you're going
Yeah
Yeah

soul on fire
[Go to Song Page]
Eldridge was a bad man
At least that's what the people said
But Eldridge he was only working out
All the things they put inside his head
He was like an angry lion
Trapped in a vice
They couldn't keep him down
And so they put his soul on ice
Well they locked him in a prison cell
Till he managed to get away
But living on the run ain't no fun
Both eyes opened every night and day
Just a little peace and quiet
Was his one desire
But it never came
Till something set his soul on fire
Now the man in the moon
Gave him the words
With a face that was clear
And a voice that was heard
Go back to your people but lean on me
They can lock you up again but I have set you free
Eldridge says he's different now
But a lot of people don't agree
They say he's only trying to free himself
I guess in time we all shall see
But I do believe his message
He ain't no liar
When he says that Jesus
Can set your soul on fire
Soul, soul on fire
Soul, he'll set your soul on fire
C'mon take me to the river
Help me get across
I need your help
I feel so lost
Can't you please
Help us, c'mon
Help me, help me
Soul on fire
Set my soul on fire
I said so-oh-wo-oul
Soul on fire
Ah yeah

shot down
[Go to Song Page]
I been shot down, talked about
Some people scandalize my name
But here I am, I talk about Jesus just the same
I've been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame
You know here I am talking 'bout Jesus just the same
I've been rebuked for the songs I've said
For the songs I've written and the life I've led
Some people don't understand me but I'm not surprised
'Cause you can't see nothing when you close your eyes
They say I'm sinful, backslidden
That I have left to follow fame
Oh here I am talking about Jesus just the same
Talk about my life, well listen to me
You've got your facts all backwards, one two three
Spreading rumors and gossip is a real bad game
The only name to spread is Jesus name
I've been shot down, talked about
Some people scandalize my name
But here I am talking about Jesus brother
Here I am talking about Jesus sister
Here I am talking about Jesus just the same
Wo oh ho oh
I been shot down, talked about

song for a small circle of friends
[Go to Song Page]
Well my life is filled with songs
But I just could not get along without my friends
And I'm happy now but when this good life ends
I know a better life begins
And love to you sir Stonehill
With your guitar full volume on your amp
You're so crazy but you know it
And I love you as we both crawl toward the lamp
With Clapton on guitar
And Charlie Watts on drums
McCartney on the Hofner bass
With blisters on his thumb
Dear Dylan, watch your fears all hide
And disappear while love inside starts growing
Oh let it start growing
You're older but less colder
Than the jokes and folks you spent your childhood snowing
Yes you did, yes you did
And someone died for all you friends
But even better yet, he lives again
And if this song does not make sense to you
I hope his spirit slips on through
He loves you
He loves you, yeah he loves you
And if this song does make sense to you (Ooh ooh ooh)
I hope his spirit slips on through
He loves you
Yes he loves you, oh yes it's true, he does
He loves you
And if this song does not appeal to you (Ooh ooh ooh)
I hope his spirit slips on through
'Cause he loves you
Ah-ah
Well my life is filled with songs

why should the devil have all the good music
[Go to Song Page]
One two one two three [Spoken]
Want the people to know
That he saved my soul
But I still like to listen to the radio
They say rock and roll is wrong
We'll give you one more chance
Say I feel so good I'm gonna get up and dance
I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I don't confuse it
No, all I'm really trying to say
Why should the devil have all the good music
I've been filled, I feel good every day, why
Because Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
They say to cut my hair
They're driving me insane
I grew it out long to make room for my brain
Sometimes people don't understand
They say what's a good boy doing listening to a rock and roll band
There's nothing wrong or even communistic about playing blues licks
If you've got a reason tell me to my face
Why should the devil have all the good music
He doesn't
I've been filled, I feel okay, woh
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
Yes he did, alright come on
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that has a beat
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me something you know that moves me
I don't like some of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet
Jesus told the truth
Jesus showed the way
There's one more thing I'd like to say
You know they nailed him to the cross
Laid him in the ground
But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down
I've been filled, I feel okay
You know all I wanna, all I wanna, all I wanna know
Is why should the devil have anything
I feel good, you know why
'Cause Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues
Jesus is the rock and he'll roll your blues
Jesus is the rock and he rolled our blues away, yeah yeah

let that tape keep rolling
[Go to Song Page]
Come on
Woo
Well I woke up in the morning, I said a morning prayer
I washed my face with soap, I ran my fingers through my hair
I went down to the studio on Hollywood and Vine
The clock said seven thirty, I made it just in time
I greeted the musicians, grabbed the nearest chair
You know I started playing my guitar and told the engineer
C'mon let that tape keep rolling [x4]
C'mon let that tape keep rolling, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon
The first song that we cut was called Lonely By Myself
I'll do the vocal later you can just leave it on the shelf
The second song we cut was called Unlucky Blues
The session's getting better now we're turning on the juice
You know the first song took us seven takes, last one took us ten
If Jesus came right now I wonder who would get in
C'mon (c'mon) let the love keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your faith keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your light keep shining
C'mon (c'mon) be careful what you're signing
C'mon (c'mon) let that love keep growing
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Do you hear me singing on your record machine
You know the piano's banging, the guitar's twanging
The water cooler's clanging, you know the light bulb's hanging
Yes the music's playing, production's clean
Cross fade all the tracks, don't leave no spaces in between
C'mon (c'mon) let the faith keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your life keep flowing
C'mon (c'mon) let your love keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) be careful c'mon, c'mon
C'mon (c'mon) be careful what you're doing
C'mon (c'mon) c'mon c'mon
I started out ten years ago, my guitar in my hand
I took the message in my heart, I laid it on the lamb
I went down to Capitol Records to record Upon This Rock
I wanted to say something, I let my music talk
I know who I am going, I know who I must be
I don't care how long it takes me, there's lots of things to see
C'mon (c'mon) let your love keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your life keep flowing
C'mon (c'mon) let your love keep shining
C'mon (c'mon) be careful what you're signing
C'mon (c'mon) let your love keep flowing
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon
You know he come walking down my street
He come up to my room
He knocked on my door
He come into my heart
He made me feel so good
So good, so tough, so tough, so tough
I said c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Let the love keep flowing
C'mon (c'mon)
C'mon (c'mon) let the love keep flowing
(C'mon) C'mon
C'mon
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon

I greeted the musicians, grabbed the nearest chair
You know I started playing my guitar and told the engineer
C'mon let that tape keep rolling [x4]
C'mon let that tape keep rolling, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon
The first song that we cut was called Lonely By Myself
I'll do the vocal later you can just leave it on the shelf
The second song we cut was called Unlucky Blues
The session's getting better now we're turning on the juice
You know the first song took us seven takes, last one took us ten
If Jesus came right now I wonder who would get in
C'mon (c'mon) let the love keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your faith keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your light keep shining
C'mon (c'mon) be careful what you're signing
C'mon (c'mon) let that love keep growing
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Do you hear me singing on your record machine
You know the piano's banging, the guitar's twanging
The water cooler's clanging, you know the light bulb's hanging
Yes the music's playing, production's clean
Cross fade all the tracks, don't leave no spaces in between
C'mon (c'mon) let the faith keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) let your life keep flowing
C'mon (c'mon) let your love keep growing
C'mon (c'mon) be careful c'mon, c'mon
C'mon (c'mon) be careful what you're doing
C'mon (c'mon) c'mon c'mon

i wish we'd all been ready
[Go to Song Page]
Life was filled with guns and war
And everyone got trampled on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold
A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
A man and wife asleep in bed
She hears a noise and turns her head, he's gone
I wish we'd all been ready
Two men walking up a hill
One disappears and one's left standing still
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
Life was filled with guns and war
Everyone got trampled, crushed on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold
A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
How could you have been so blind

Connect the hours, guard those hours and I, I'd rather see a ??? than a sidewalk and a tree than a building [Spoken by Larry]
That's pure un-retouched Larry Norman. He'll be back to visit in a bit but first take a listen to a bit of this raw un-retouched recording of Larry Norman at his best in concert [Spoken by 'host']

the rock that doesn't roll
[Go to Song Page]
I was lost and blind till a friend of mine
Came and took me by the hand
And he led me to his kingdom
That was in another land
Now I feel so blessed 'cause he gave me rest
I finally feel like I've passed the test
I wanna be like him, yes that's my goal
Like the rock that doesn't roll
Well he's the rock that doesn't roll
He's the rock that doesn't roll
You know he's good for the body, great for the soul
He's the rock that doesn't roll
I was lost and blind till a friend of mine
Came and took me by the hand
And he led me to his kingdom
That was in another land
Now I feel so blessed 'cause he gave me rest

Larry Norman was really the first of his kind to do not gospel songs, but songs from a christian point of view in the rock and roll idiom. It may have had something to do with his early impressions of christian music [Spoken by 'host']
I thought people that sang about Jesus usually got together ??? and they all gained a lot of weight, and they had terrible stories that made them cry on stage, and then they smiled a lot to show that their lives were different and then they sang harmony and. One of them had a real high voice and he'd hit a high note and we'd all clap, and another man would have a real low voice and he'd go down onto the bottom and we'd all clap and think that was really a. good circus trick too [Spoken by Larry]
Eldridge was a bad man
At least that's what the people said
But Eldridge he was only working out
All the things they put inside his head
He was like an angry lion
Trapped in a vice
They couldn't keep him down
And so they put his soul on ice
Well they locked him in a prison cell
Till he managed to get away
But living on the run ain't no fun
Both eyes opened every night and day
Just a little peace and quiet
Was his one desire
But it never came
Till something set his soul on fire
Now the man in the moon
Gave him the words
Please turn this cassette over to the other side. If you're done with it please place it back in the rack [Spoken by 'host']

I started out ten years ago, my guitar in my hand
I took the message in my heart, I laid it on the lamb
I went down to Capitol Records to record Upon This Rock

Larry Norman is a sensitive artist with a strong desire to communicate truth rather than tickle ears and he has a low tolerance for hypocrisy. Even this record is a true reflection of what the concert goers heard sans the studio refinement and overdubs commonly added [Spoken by 'host' as music continues]

watch what you're doing
[Go to Song Page]
Mama killed a chicken, she thought it was a duck
She put it on the table with its legs sticking up
Papa broke his glasses when he fell down drunk
Tried to drown the kitty cat, turned out to be a skunk
You gotta watch what you're doing
Oh don't you know
You gotta watch where you're going
Yeah
Some folks smile and they seem alright
They say God is just a figment of imagination but well
I wonder how many gonna be surprised
When they look straight up and see him coming through the skies
You've gotta watch what you're doing
Oh do you know
You gotta watch where you're going
Don't you know
You gotta watch where you're going
Yeah

shot down
[Go to Song Page]
I been shot down, talked about
Some people scandalize my name
But here I am, I talk about Jesus just the same
I've been knocked down, kicked around
But like a moth drawn to the flame
You know here I am talking 'bout Jesus just the same
I've been rebuked
If Larry isn't as prolific as some songwriters perhaps it is because of his concern for the message [Spoken by 'host']
Oh I could write commercial christian music, that's easy. What's difficult is to write christian music that has credibility to non-christians, or some kind of integrity to a higher awareness of what eh scriptures mean. It's not enough to just take a verse and set it to music. We're supposed to understand the scriptures well enough to explain it five different ways, twenty different ways if our friend still doesn't understand it after we read to him from the King James version [Spoken by Larry]
For the songs I've said
For the songs I've written and the life I've led
Some people don't understand me but I'm not surprised
'Cause you can't see nothing when you close your eyes
They say I'm sinful, backslidden
That I have left to follow fame
[Larry continues talking as the music transitions from Shot Down to Why Should The Devil Have All The Good Music]

I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that has a beat
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me something you know that moves me
I don't like some of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet
Jesus told the truth
Jesus showed the way
There's one more thing I'd like to say
You know they nailed him to the cross
Laid him in the ground
But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down
I've been filled, I feel okay
You know all I wanna, all I wanna, all I wanna know
Is why should the devil have anything
I feel good, you know why
