spirit in the sky
[Go to Song Page]
Hey, well we're here in the big LA. It's a good looking Saturday at eleven o'clock. That is if you can see past the smog with your telescope . Now why don't we get down with some deep eh theological study with a little tune here written by Norman Greenbaum, Spirit In The Sky [Spoken]
Huh huh argh haaugh
Ha ha
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
When I lay me down to die
Going up to the spirit in the sky
Going up to the spirit in the sky (In the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (When I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best
Prepare yourself, you know it's a must
You gotta have a friend in Jesus
So you know that when you die
He's gonna recommend you to the spirit in the sky
Gonna recommend you to the spirit in the sky (In the sky)
That's where you're gonna go when you die (When you die)
When you die and they lay you to rest
You wanna go to the place that's your best
Go to the place that's the best
Woo
Never been a sinner, I never sin
I got a friend in Jesus
So you know that when I die
He's gonna set me up with the spirit in the sky
That's bad [Spoken]
(Spirit in the sky)
That's where I'm gonna go when I die (When I die)
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm gonna go to the place that's the best
Go to the place that's the best
Ha ha ha what [Spoken]
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Woo hoo
Ow

Ha-he hold on uncle, eh Surf Duke needs his medicine here, hahahahahahaha. Yeah I doubled up on my medication today, I'm feeling fine folks. OK, we're cooking with the Surf Duke today and that was eh Spirit In The Sky. I got another little blast from the past for you called Hand In The Hand, written by Gene Snowbird MacLellan [Spoken]
One two three go [Spoken]
Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
Then take a look at yourself and you will look at others differently
Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee
Every time I look into the holy book I start to tremble
When I read about the part where that carpenter cleared the temple
Because those buyers and the sellers weren't much different fellas than what I profess to be
And it causes me shame to know I'm not the man that I could be
Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
And take a look at yourself and you will look at your brothers differently
Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee
Mama taught me how to pray before I reached the age of seven
And when I'm down on my knees I feel a little bit closer to heaven
My daddy lived his life with two kids and a wife, he did the best that he could do
And he taught me a better way to live, I'll pass it on to you
He said
Put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Mmm-hmm you put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
Then take a look at yourself and you will look at others differently
Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee
Put your hand in the hand, hand in the hand
You put your hand in the hand, hand in the hand
Then take a look at yourself and you will look at others differently
Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee
Alright you put your hand in the hand of the man who stilled the water
Yeah yeah yeah you put your hand in the hand of the man who calmed the sea
Take a look at yourself little cha cha cha you see things differently
Y' put your hand in the hand of the hand of the hand of the hand
Of the hand of the hand of the man
Yeah the man from Galilee

[Go to Song Page]
OK now why don't we kick back and listen to a hot little trilogy of faith, hope and royalties ha ha, by Paul Simon, Paul McCartney and The Chiffon, ah I mean George Harrison. All these songs were number one and you know what that means. Money [Spoken]
When you're weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
Mmnn hmmn
I'm on your side when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water, I will lay me down
When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard, I will comfort you
Wo oh oh
I will take your part (Ah)
When darkness comes (Ah)
And pain is all around it (Ah ah)

[Go to Song Page]
When I find myself in times of trouble
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
And in my darkest hour
She is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
Let it be [x4]
There will be an answer
Let it be
When the night is cloudy
There is still a light that shines on me
Shine on till tomorrow
Let it be
I wake up to the sound of music
Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom
Let it be
Oh let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be (Ah ah ah ah)

I'd like to put in a word to my PE coach who used to pick on me back in high school. Hey Mister Gardener, up your nose with a garden hose haha. Yeah [Spoken]
I have finally found a way to live
Just like I never did before
I know that I don't have much to give
But I can open any door
Everybody knows the secret
Everybody knows the score
I have finally found a way to live
In the color of the Lord
I have finally found a way to live
Like I never could before
And I know that I don't have much to give
But soon I'll open any door
Everybody knows the secret
Everybody, everybody knows the score
I have finally found a place to live
In the presence of the Lord
In the presence of the Lord
I have finally found a way to live
Just like I never could before, wo-oh-oh wo oh oh
I know that I don't have much to give
But I can open any door

Hey looking good and cooking good here with the Surf Duke, my muscles rippling in the sun ha. Incredible, hey, all kidding aside I am gorgeous huh. Alright I know you love me and I love you back people, I love you back. Now let's see, we're gonna be rocking out. Hey we've got a really interesting tune here by ah a gentleman who knows how to write 'em sure enough, Randy Newman. I Think He's Hiding and He Gives Us All His Love [Spoken]
If the big boy comes tomorrow
There'll be no more teardrops
There'll be no more sorrow
If the big boy comes tomorrow
Will he take you with him
Have you been good
Have you been bad
Oh oh oh have you been bad
If you haven't lived the way you should
You'll wish you had
When the big boy brings his fiery furnace
Will he likes what he sees
Or will he strike the fire and burn us
Oh he's so great
But he's so straight
And you know he's watching
Have you been good
Have you been bad
When things don't go the way they should
It makes him sad
Come on big boy
Come and save us
Come and look at what we've done
With what you gave us
Now I've heard it said
That the big boy's dead but

stranger in a strange land
[Go to Song Page]
Do you sometimes feel tired, frustrated, lonely? When you went to the doctor to get your last physical, did he look at you and say you'd have to pay in advance? Did you save up all your money to buy a used car and then when you drove it home and stopped at the intersection, the police tried to tow it away as a wrecked vehicle? Is that what's got you down? Do you sometimes feel like a stranger in a strange land walking through the desert looking for the prince of peace, but your feet stick in the sand? Is that what's troubling you bubby? Well, never give up, never give up, never give up, that ship [Spoken]
How many days has it been since I was born
How many days until I die
Do you know any way that I can make you laugh
Do I only know how to make you cry
Well when the baby looked around him
It was such a sight to see
He shared a simple secret with the wise men
He's a stranger in a strange land
Oh he's a stranger in a strange land
Tell me why he's a stranger in a strange land
Oh he's a stranger in a strange land
How many years will it take to see the son (Ooh ooh ooh ooh)
How many miles until he comes (Ooh ooh ooh)
Kiss my confusion away in the night (Ooh ooh ooh ooh)
And lay by my side until the morning comes (Ooh ooh ooh)
Well when the baby looked around him
He was such a sight to see
He shared a simple secret with the wise men
He's a stranger in a strange land
Tell me why, stranger in a strange land
Yeah he's a stranger in a strange land

prince of peace
[Go to Song Page]
Oh try and judge me only by my time and changes
And don't mistake my words for I say many
Listen closely to this song and watch my eyes
There's not much time left to start if any
Lovely long haired children living in the streets
I think they're lucky, not afraid to love each other
They're not afraid to be themselves with someone else
Or choose their friends by love and not by colour
Never treat a brother like a passing stranger
Always try to keep your love light burning
Listen closely to his song and watch his eyes
For he might be the prince of peace returning (Aah aah)
Oh yes he might be the prince of peace returning (Aah aah)
Love the no no no
Love the blind and wounded as you would yourself
And the businessmen in cells collecting pennies
They judge their wealth by coins that they give away
And not the one they keep themselves for spending
Never be impatient with the ones you love
'Cause it just might be yourself that you're burning
Listen only to their song and watch their eyes
For you might see the prince of peace returning
Oh never treat a brother like a passing stranger
Always try to keep that love light burning
Listen closely to this song and watch the sky
And you might see the prince of peace returning (Aah aah aah)

song for adam
[Go to Song Page]
That was a double header written by the great white fox himself, Leon Russell an' now we've got a tender tune coming up for you here by ah, someone I'm sure you all know and love, Jackson Browne. He's ah hailed as ah a prophet of the seventies by some and then, some say he's just making a profit in the seventies. Haha [Spoken]
Though Adam was a friend of mine I did not know him well
He was alone into his distance, he was deep inside his well
I could guess what he was laughing at but I couldn't really tell
Now the story goes that Adam jumped but I'm thinking that he fell
Together we went travelling, as we received the call
His destination India and I had none at all
But I still remember laughing with our backs against the wall
So free of fear he never thought that one of us might fall
I sit before my only candle
Though it's so little light to find my way
Now this story unfolds before my candle
Which gets shorter every hour as it reaches for the day
And I feel just like a candle in a way
I guess I'll get there
But I can't say for sure
When we parted we were laughing still as our goodbyes were said
And I never heard from him again, as each our lives we led
Except for once in someone else's letter that I read
And then I heard the sudden word that a friend of mine was dead
I sit beside my only candle
Like a pilgrim sits beside the way
Now this journey appears before my candle
Like a song that's growing fainter the harder that I play
Till I fear before I end I'll fade away
I guess I'll get there
But I can't say for sure

[Go to Song Page]
Now here's a song from a group that's been rolling stones for more than a decade, written by the Glimmer Twins themselves, Mick and Keith. Or as they say in England, Mick 'n' Keef. So this is the Surf Duke keeping jive alive on Radio 95 with Shine A Light [Spoken]
Saw you stretched out in room ten o nine
With a smile on your face
And a tear right in your eye
Ooh I couldn't seem to get a light on you
My sweet honey love
I thought I saw you jangling down a street
Won't turn your eyes from e'ry woman that you meet
Could it be I was just high on you
????
May the good Lord shine a light on you, la la la-ah
Make every song you sing your favorite tune
May the good Lord shine a light on you
Wo-oh-oh (Aah) yeah like the evening sun
When you're drunk in the alley with your clothes all torn
And you need someone to lead you in the cold grey dawn
Hmm I can see so many flies on you

Saw you stretched out in room ten o nine
With a smile on your face
And a tear right in your eye
Ooh I couldn't seem to get a light on you
My sweet honey love
I thought I saw you jangling down a street
Won't turn your eyes from e'ry woman that you meet
Could it be I was just high on you

May the good Lord shine a light on you, la la la-ah
Make every song you sing your favorite tune
May the good Lord shine a light on you
Wo-oh-oh (Aah) yeah like the evening sun
When you're drunk in the alley with your clothes all torn
And you need someone to lead you in the cold grey dawn

A Special Edition cassette of this album was released in 1988. For the most part it is the same as the vinyl release, except that it contains two additional tracks. The Road And The Sky is placed at the end of side one (so after Presence Of The Lord), and I Am Waiting is the final track. Note also that Shine a Light fades out about forty seconds earlier, and so is lyrically different
The two bonus tracks were actually recorded for an intended Streams Of White Light Part 2, which was never completed

The Road And THE Sky
[Go to Song Page]
Two three four [Spoken]
Well when we come to the place where the road and the sky collide
I'm going over the edge just to let my spirit fly
Well he told me I was gonna have to work for a living
But all I want to do is ride
I don't know where we're going from here
Why don't you decide
Well I used to spend my time at the bottom of the wishing well
And I could hear my dreams ringing clear as the bell
Yeah I used to know where the end of the world began
But now it's getting hard to tell
We could be just around a corner from heaven or a mile from hell
Ah yeah
Well I'm just fading (fading away) away from yesterday (yesterday)
Behind the wheel of a stolen Chevrolet (Wheel of a stolen Chevrolet)
Try to get a little higher (Get a little higher)
See if I can hot wire reality (See if I can hot wire reality)
Wa wa-ooh yeah
Now can you see those dark clouds gathering up ahead
They're gonna wash this planet clean like the bible said
Hey you can hold on steady and try to be ready
But everybody's gonna get wet
Don't think it won't happen just because it hasn't happened yet
Well I'm just fading (fading away) away from yesterday (yesterday)
And the wheel of a stolen Chevrolet (Wheel of a stolen Chevrolet)
I try to get a little higher (Get a little higher)
See if I can hot wire reality (See if I can hot wire reality)
Wa wa-ooh

The CD release is the same as the LP but with the two bonus tracks from the special edition cassette added on the end. Additionally, Larry's Big Bomber introductions to The Road And The Sky and I Am Waiting are included, and the count ins removed from both songs, as well as the drum roll at the end of The Road And The Sky. Note that Randy's Surf Duke sign off (from the end of Shine A Light) is on the start of The Road And The Sky on the CD. Note also that I Am Waiting fades out later than on the special edition cassette

Hey babies, it's the Big Bomber, putting some cool moves on some hot grooves. An'd I'll tell you why they call me that mister The Surf Duke; because I'm always coming at you with direct hits. Hey I can barely hear the Surf Duke's cries for help as his puny little driftwood body washes out to sea. Somebody throw that man a line. A punch line. I'm just joking, hey he's never been funnier than he is right now. Glug glug. Speaking of the beach, I feel like Demosthenes walking along the shore speaking with pebbles in his mouth. But these pebbles might just turn out to be pearls of wisdom. We got Dylan coming up, James Taylor and right now Judee Sill and My Man On Love, Jesus Was A Cross Maker [Spoken]
