song for a small circle of friends
[Go to Song Page]
Larry Norman yeah [Spoken by compere]
Yeah. I, I’ve been here before. This is earth, right? [Spoken]
Well my life is filled with songs
But I just could not get along without my friends
And I'm happy now but when this good life ends
I know a better life begins
And love to Randy Stonehill
With his guitar full volume on his amp
He’s so crazy but he knows it
And I still love him as we both crawl toward the lamp
With Clapton on guitar
Charlie Watts on drums (buh tss)
McCartney on the Hofner bass
With blisters on his thumbs
Dear Dylan watch your fears all hide
And disappear while love inside keeps growing
Oh let it keep growing
You're older but less colder
Than the jokes and folks you spent your childhood snowing
And someone died for all you friends
But even better yet he lives again
And if these songs do not make sense to you
I hope his spirit slips on through
He loves you
He loves you, God loves you
And if these words do not appeal to you
I hope his spirit slips on through
You know Jesus loves you
He loves you, wa-ha

turn it up
Yeah. No. Uh can you turn this microphone up a little bit? Past where it says folk music, just turn it up. Oh yeah, I’m gonna unplug this thing here. If I turn that around so they could hear, I don’t need to, like him, I’m standing right up here next to myself. Thank you. Turn it round to them. If I turn that thing around would it make like uh bat noises in the room, a-whoo-ssssss? Or would it be better for the…. Did that guy go home? [Spoken]
why don't you look into jesus
[Go to Song Page]
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup
You drown your sorrows till you can't stand up
Take a look at what you done to yourself
Why don't ya, you put the bottle back on the shelf
Yellow fingers from your cigarettes
Your hands are shaking while your body sweats
Why don't you look into Jesus
He’s got the answer, ah-hmmmm
You got gonorrhea on Valentine’s day
VD [Spoken, faintly]
You're still looking for the perfect lay
You think rock and roll'll set you free
You'll be deaf before you're thirty three
You’re shooting junk until you're half insane
A broken needle in your purple vein
Why don't you look into Jesus
He’s got the answer, hmmm
You work all night
Sleep all day
Take your money
Throw it all away
You say you're gonna be a superstar
But you never hung around enough
To find out who you really are
Oh ah ow-ah-ow ow ah oh ah oh wa-hm ah ow
Oh ah ow-ah-ow wa oh ah oh wa ah-ow
Now think back to when you were a child
Your soul was free, your heart ran wild
Each day was different, life was a thrill
You knew tomorrow would be better still
Things have changed, you're much older now
If you're unhappy and you don't know how
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
You oughta check it for yourself
Look into Jesus
He’s got the answer
Yes he does, yes he does
Why don't you look into Jesus
He's got the answer, ah-ow
He’s got the answer

my feet are on the rock
[Go to Song Page]
Before men got a hold of uh rock and roll, took it away from the church and got a hold of things like heavy metal and turned them into devices for confusion and unrest and biting bats heads off with their buh and eh you know, fake blood capsules dripping down their face and, and eh the the creative things that men do to good things that God has given us. Eh men made music by taking whatever leaves of grass they could find around them and stretching them between their hands and blowing whistles, or creating pipes from hollow eh twigs and and eh and before music became very polished with 48 track machines and you know, before MTV, people sat around and made bad music like this. And it was, it was good because it was bad.
We’re gonna mix and match this Spanish guitar with that electric guitar with that acoustic grand piano. Just imagine you’re just coming down the street and you’re walking by some boys and eh, and they’re albinos. And they’re singing the blues you know. [Spoken]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving it does not satisfy my soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone
But I have got the Lord and I am not alone
So if you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
‘Cos God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
Take it Charley, take it
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving, it does not satisfy my soul
So if I’m down, brother I go off on my own, yes I do
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Hey we're rockin'

a woman of god
[Go to Song Page]
I can't do it [Spoken]
Woh oh-oh yeah eh ah ah wa yeah yeah yeah no
I need a woman who doesn't take drugs, don’t mess with men
Believes the bible, despises sin
Lifts me up instead o' knocking me down
Follows God instead of running around
I need a woman who's kind and true
I haven't found her but until I do
I'll be looking for a woman of God
A woman with a righteous heart
I'm looking for a woman of God
Who doesn't easily fall apart
Yeah
I need a woman who knows the measure of what she's worth
Stores up treasure but not on earth
Seeks God's will in all that's done
Keeps her mind on the holy one
I need a woman who's kind and true
I haven't found her but until I do
I'll be looking for a woman of God
A woman with a righteous heart
I'm looking for a woman of God
Who doesn't easily fall apart
Wo oh oh-ah-ah
The bible says a good wife who can find, she's more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband is glad in her. She does him good, not evil, all her days. She reaches out her hands to the poor and her children shall rise up and call her blessed [Spoken]
I'm looking for a woman like that (I'm looking for a woman of God)
A woman with a righteous heart
You know I'm looking for a woman of God
Who doesn't easily fall apart
Wo oh wo-oh-oh-oh-oh
I'm looking for a woman of God
A woman with a righteous heart
Know I'm looking for a woman of God
Who doesn't easily fall apart
Yeah ah, well I'm looking for a woman, a woman of God
A woman with a righteous, righteous intention and a pure heart
Looking for a woman of God
Who does not give up and fall apart
Yeah, yes I am looking, looking for a woman like that (I'm looking for a woman of God)
A woman with a righteous, righteous heart (A woman with a righteous heart)
I’m looking for a woman of God

i don't believe in miracles
[Go to Song Page]
I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real, I don't pretend
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Life is no one's friend
But when I opened up the door
You walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
I don't believe in miracles
I've been around, I've seen enough, oh no
The only way to get along, you must be strong
You must be tough
Life is one big bluff
And when we met, suddenly
I felt so strange, I felt a change come over me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
‘Cos when I opened up the door
You walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor
Do you suppose a mm
I don't believe in miracles
I’ve been around, I’ve seen enough
I don’t believe in miracles
I must be strong
You must stay tough
Life is one big bluff
But when we met I felt so free and suddenly
I felt this change come over me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real, I don't pretend

One [Spoken]
He's an unidentified flying object
You will see him in the air
He's an unidentified flying object
And you will drop your hands and stare
You will be afraid to tell your neighbours
They might think that it's not true
But when they open up the morning papers
They will know they've seen him too
He will come back like he promised
With the price already paid
He will gather up his followers
And take us all away
He's an unidentified flying object
He will sweep down from the sky
He's an unidentified flying object
And some will sleep but will not die
He's an unidentified flying object
Coming back to take you home
He's an unidentified flying object
He will roll away your stone
And if there's life on other planets
Then I'm sure that he must know
And he's been there once already
And has died to save their soul
He's an unidentified flying object
You will see him in the air
He's an unidentified flying object
And you will drop your hands and stare
He's an unidentified flying object
Coming back to take you home

sweet song of salvation
[Go to Song Page]
Well this is a song they used to sing in church, until they found out I wrote it. [Spoken]
When you know a pretty story
You don't let it go unsaid
You tell it to your children
As you tuck them into bed
And if you know a wonderful secret
Just tell it to your friends
Tell them that a lifetime filled with Jesus
Is like a street that never ends
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And tell the people everywhere
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
To every man, every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Now look around you as you sing it
There are people everywhere
And to those who stop to listen
Your sweet song becomes their prayer
So if you know ah woo ooh ooh ow ow
Tell it to your friends
Tell them that a lifetime filled with you know who
Is like a street that never ends
Alright yeah that’s right
You sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let your laughter fill the air
Sing, you can sing it too, sweet sweet song of sal, it’s real simple it’s repetitious, you know it’s rock and roll. Just like our parents said, it’s repetitious
You sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
To every man in every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Alright Dan, take it Dan, yeah-ah
Yeah ah-oh-yeah
Wo-oh wo-oh wo yea-eh-yeah yeah wo-oh wo-oh wah wah wah
You got to sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let your laughter fill the air
You sing that sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet song of salvation
Tell the people everywhere, everywhere
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Yeah tell president Bush and the United Nations
Sing that sweet sweet song salvation
Let the people know that Jesus ca… Come on you guys sing it, I don’t wanna sing it, I’ve been singing this for twenty years
[Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation]
Let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Tell the people everywhere
You gotta sing that sweet sweet song [of salvation] yeah eh-hee
[To every man in every nation] Everywhere, every man
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Ah-ah-ah ho-oh-amen

walking backwards down the stairs
[Go to Song Page]
Don’t cry, this song is for you [Spoken]
Walking backward down the stairs
Trying to get higher
How can I get anywhere
Walking backwards down the stairs
People stop to watch me
Wonder what I'm doing
What direction I'm pursuing
I pretend I'm free
But actually I'm
Walking backwards down the stairs
Trying to get higher
How can I get anywhere
Walking backwards down the stairs
Watching life elude me
Slipping through my grasp
Oh I know the truth at last
But to reach the top I've
Got to stop from
Walking backwards down the stairs
Trying to get higher, higher
How can I get anywhere
Walking backwards down the stair
Down the stairs
Down the stairs
Down the stairs
Don’t cry, this song is for you [Spoken]
Walking backward down the stairs
Trying to get higher
How can I get anywhere
Walking backwards down the stairs
People stop to watch me
Wonder what I'm doing

Walking backwards down the stairs

rumors
I live in LA. You know, when you live in the darkness it’s easier to see a thousand points of light. Yeah I hea, I heard some rumours about me, rumours that I had backslidden, that I wasn’t a christian. That I, I wa, you know I was following the devil and em taking drugs and ah I was very upset to hear these things. So I asked around and I found out it’s not true. [Spoken]
baby out of wedlock
[Go to Song Page]
I had a baby out of wedlock
Her old man got me in a headlock
I was an unwed father
But don't bother feeling sorry for me
I took a lot of LSD
I smoked a lot of mar-ja-weenie
But it did not help me
It did not set me free
Jesus, why'd you go and do it
Why’d you help someone like me
You saved me, you forgave me
And I swear you set me free
You know you took away my problems
One by one
I guess you knew what you were doing
When you sent your son
You know the way that I was living
It was like taking without giving
And I hurt a lot of people
And I lost my friends
I spent just a little time in prison
But now I know the Lord is risen
And now I never need
To be locked up again
Oh Jesus, why'd you go and do it
Why’d you help someone like me
You saved me, you forgave me
And you know you set me free
You kinda took away my problems
One by one
And now I know you knew what you were doing
When you sent your son
I had a baby out of wedlock

a note from mr god
[Go to Song Page]
I was so down
Just hanging around
Wondering what to do
When suddenly I was surprised from out of the blue
The birds sang their song as I walked along
I suddenly felt quite odd
‘Cos out of the sky fell a note from Mr God
And it said
You got the blues but you can shake it
If you have faith you can make it
You have a chance
You must take it while you can
Don't give up hope
Never lose it
You got a choice but you must choose it
And that's what it said on this note from Mr God
Ah ba la la etc
Yeah this is a song about this man who’s walking down the street and he’s had a little bit too much to drink, for about twenty years. And he sees this piece of paper on the ground and he picks it up and it’s just a, it’s just a piece of paper somebody dropped out of their bible. It’s kind of a tract you know, one of those things that somebody writes down their, their ideas about how to explain God to somebody else they want to give this piece of paper to and this person just drops it on the ground and this guy picks it up and he starts reading, thinks this is about me. How could anybody know about me? Except for God. And that’s why he thought this was a note from God. And it wasn’t. But he thought it was. But it wasn’t. But he thought it was, and that’s what’s important.
You know what happens when you start getting involved with God. Your life starts changing and you start getting kinda happy and you know, kinda messes up your viewpoint of life, you kinda change your perspective and the first thing you know you’re so glad that things have changed in your life you wanna go tell all your friends about it, and that’s what this guy did. He wanted to go back and tell all of his friends that he found this note from God and it said [Spoken]
You got the blues but you can shake it

You have a chance
So you must take it while you can
Don't give up hope
Never lose it
You have a choice but you know, you got to choose it
And that's what it said on this note from Mr God
So if you feel down
With your chin on the ground
And suddenly you feel odd
Well just look all around look down look down on the ground you some might see some kind of piece of paper floating around might just be a note from Mr God
I was so down
Just hanging around
Wondering what to do
When suddenly I was surprised from out of the blue

You know what happens when you start getting involved with God. Your life starts changing and you start getting kinda happy and you know, kinda messes up your viewpoint of life, you kinda change your perspective and the first thing you know you’re so glad that things have changed in your life you wanna go tell all your friends about it, and that’s what this guy did. He wanted to go back and tell all of his friends that he found this note from God and it said [Spoken]
You got the blues but you can shake it
If you have faith you can make it
You have a chance
So you must take it while you can
Don't give up hope
Never lose it
You have a choice but you know, you got to choose it
And that's what it said on this note from Mr God
So if you feel down
With your chin on the ground
And suddenly you feel odd
Well just look all around look down look down on the ground you some might see some kind of piece of paper floating around might just be a note from Mr God

Ah they're, they're filming this tonight, which must be why all these lights are on, which must be why it's hotter than it was this afternoon, which must be why I didn't think of bringing a towel to, 'cos it wasn't so hot this afternoon. Anybody have a spare towel on them? You know I think this mic, I'm not complaining 'cos this is very good equipment, I know that 'cos it's not even banged up or anything. But this is not rock and roll, this is, oh US army. Be all that you can be. Yeah I think they used to drop some, something like this, an earlier version of this, during the war, they used to drop these outta planes on the enemy. Eh because the, the enemy couldn't here these coming, when we dropped 'em. So could you either turn this microphone up louder or turn the lights down lower?
Well I'll ju, I'll just sing folk music, it don't matter. [Spoken]

A Woman Of God (Introduction)
Could you turn this one on if you've turned it off, 'cos now somebody needs it up here? It's not working. [Larry spoken]
Well that's ok, I'll just play louder. [Dan Cutrona - or possibly Charles Norman]

I think it's time for the Jesus movement, the one that started two thousand years ago, the one that was foretold of almost six thousand years ago. I think it's time for something to happen. Uh, something is happening around this area. I'm curious about this area. I, I wonder what's going on 'cos something's going on. Maybe you don't feel it 'cos you live here.
[Spoken]

i don't believe in miracles (introduction)
This is a rock song that, I recorded this on Capitol Records in 1969 and I had the flu. I had a hundred and three temperature the day this was tracked, that they they, the musicians came in. And they weren't gonna stop the session even though I wasn't there. It's just the way that company always was. They did worse things to the Beatles and eh. This is a song about life, about coming to a pla, a place where you're not sure if there is a God or not, but you kinda think there is. And you kinda think something's been happening in your life and it's kinda his fault, because things are starting to turn out differently than they have before. And you've been thinking about God a lot. And you've been kinda halfway talking to him. And it seems like there's a line, an invisible line right in front of you. And you wanna walk across it, and you wanna go in this direction for the rest of your life, because it's so beautiful to contemplate this movement within your life that seems to be coming from, from God. But you're not sure. I don't know what you're not sure of, you're not sure ah, you're serious enough to keep on going or what if you cross the line and nothing happens. It, it's just, it's about this moment of contemplation, of indecision, anticipation. This is how I feel for kids that in the CCPC program. My offering. [Spoken]
