lyrics version 1
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na nada na
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na nada na na
When you know a pretty story
You don't let it go unsaid
You tell it to your children
As you tuck them into bed
And when you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Because a lifetime filled with happiness
Is like a street that never ends
Alright
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And tell the people everywhere
A-sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
To every man, every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Na na na na na na na na
Na na na na nada na na na

lyrics version 4
Ah ha-ah. Uh, this is, uh, I have to have it turned up louder if I’m going to sing rock and roll
Aow, ow, aw, ow. Who's in charge of the microphones? Uh, no, I can adjust it, I just want it louder [Spoken]
Now when you know a pretty story you don't let it go unsaid
You tell it to your children as you tuck them into bed
And when you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Tell them that a life time filled with Jesus is like a street that never ends, alright
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And tell the people everywhere
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
To every man and every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
And that's the way it goes. Those of you who have English backgrounds can appreciate the alliteration of sing that sweet sweet song of salvation. And this is a sing-along and those of you with lisps I don't really, uh. So if you'll sing this part [Spoken]
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Then I will sing the next part [Spoken]
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
La, la, la, la, la, la, la
Sing that sweet sweet
Now you men can drop out at this part if you want. You women can hold your head high. We'll try it once. Are you ready? [Spoken]
One, two, three
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the duh da da
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Ooh-ooh
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Da da dan da ba
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
Yeah, that was good. Alright, are you ready? Are you on your own? Youth workers and leaders? [Spoken]
Alright, one, two, three
(Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation)
Sing it like you mean it
And let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet sweet (song of salvation)
And tell the people everywhere
(Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation)
Some, I know some of you have mnemonic devices that you've learned as you, you know, have taught, ah. Mnemonic means things, visual things or physical things that help you understand what's going on. Like sometimes a teacher will draw on the blackboard as he lectures to his class so that the pupils will visualize what’s going on or sometimes a teacher will take a ruler and hit one of the students. So if I get you physically involved I know your minds are, well, physically... Why don't we clap? I'll give you a pattern. This is rock and roll. Rock and roll as you know, if you're an adult, means repetitious. So that, that's why the words are the same all throughout the song. Now if I give you a pattern it will be, uh, it will have a beat you know. It’ll be, what is that word that man who thinks rock and roll's of the devil used, uh, syncopation. Syncopation. I don't use words like that. Syncopation. Well this is rock and roll so we'll syncopate it so you'll all know which side of the pearly gates it's on [Spoken]
We'll do it like this [Spoken]
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap] and let your laughter laugh
They missed it. It's only twice [Spoken]
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap]
That was good. Now the second section of tables. You can do the same thing as the first section. Those of you who are uptight about clapping for a religious, you know, song or experience, ah, you can think of it as praying, but ju' rapidly. And the waitresses and the cooks can join in. I know you haven't, you know, paid the price of the convention here, and you don't have meal tickets but you’re welcome, to join in [Spoken]
Sing that sweet (sweet song of salvation) come on, come on
Let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet (sweet song of salvation) [clap-clap]
Tell the people everywhere
Sing that sweet (sweet song of salvation) [clap-clap]
To every man and every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Ah
If only your youth groups could see you right now [Spoken]
Now look around you as you sing it
There are people everywhere
And to those who stop to listen
This sweet song becomes a prayer
'Cause when you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Go on and tell them that a lifetime filled with you know who

Every man in every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
You've got to let the people know that Jesus cares
He really does, he died for all of them to set them free from sin
You let the people know that Jesus cares
Sit around tables, sit in chairs but you've got to let the people know that Jesus cares
Go away from here, get on a plane, go back home and do your thing
Be a leader
But don't set up followers
Don't call yourself a leader
Jesus is the leader
You're a follower too
You may be in front of some other people in line
But you’re not the leader, you're a follower
There are no leaders, rock and roll
There are no leaders but the Lord
Don't set yourself up as an example
Kids will look to you and say, oh, if I could only be as good as him
If they only knew
Woo-oo-oo -oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooh
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap]
And let your laughter fill the air

You can make up your own words this time
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap]
They don't necessarily have to rhyme
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation [clap-clap]

You sing that sweet sweet song of salvation woo hoo
And tell the people everywhere
You sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
To every man, every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Now look around you as you sing it
There are people everywhere
And to those who stop to listen
Your sweet song becomes their prayer
'Cause when you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Go on and tell them that a lifetime filled with you know who
Is like a street that never ends
Alright it's your turn, sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let your laughter fill the air
You sing that [sweet sweet song of salvation] That's right
Tell the people everywhere
You sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
To every man in the United Nations
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
You've got to let the people know that Jesus cares
He really does, you know he died for all of us to set us free from sin
Open up your life and let him in, he really cares, he really does
Sing it here, be part of something big
Even when you're by yourself you're part of something bigger
Don't look at this situation here today
Don't flip out, it's not the best thing you're ever gonna be part of
Not the biggest thing you're ever gonna do
I'm not talking religion, I'm talking 'bout Jesus
Let the people know that Jesus cares
You let the people know that Jesus cares ah ha ha ha
Wait a minute, wait a minute, this is the big build up
Woo-ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ah-ow
Ah-hu-ugh, ah-hu-wuh
This is to let you know it's rock and roll
Yeah awlright, ye-uh
Ow ow ow owm-ow
You don't let it go unsaid
You tell it to your children
As you tuck them into bed
And when you know a wonderful secret

There are people everywhere
And to those who stop to listen
Your sweet song becomes their prayer
So if you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Tell them that a lifetime filled with you know who
Is like a street that never ends
Alright it's your turn
Yeah-eh ah
Yeah let your laughter fill the air
Sing that sweet sweet (song of salvation)
And tell the people everywhere
You got to sing that sweet sweet (song of salvation)
To every man and every nation
Sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the people know that Jesus cares
Ba-bam

And to those who stop to listen to you talking to them
Your sweet song might become their prayer
So if you know this wonderful secret

When you know a pretty story
You don't let it go unsaid
You tell it to your children
As you tuck them into bed
And when you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Because a lifetime filled with happiness
Is like a street that never ends
Look around you as you sing it
There are people everywhere
And to those who stop to listen
Your sweet song becomes a prayer
'Cause when you know a wonderful secret
You tell it to your friends
Tell them that a lifetime filled with Jesus
Is like a street that never ends
Alright co' co' co' sing that sweet sweet song of salvation
And let the laughter fill
[The music continues but with reduced volume, and Larry talks over the top]
My song of salvation of course is Jesus and it's been a sweet song to me and to most people that I know. It's my faith that made me interested in singing just about Jesus and it's my interest in the freedom and the, the good life that God gives us, it wants me to encourage other people to follow God, find happiness [Spoken by Larry]

I've always felt ambivalent about this song. I know that peopie like it, and I'm aware of how popular it has been, in its own way, preceding me around the world. I don't really enjoy singing it, but I do it so that the audience can clap it to death and sing along. Perhaps I don't really respect this song because I wrote it in my sleep. I had decided to give up music as a sacrifice to God. I was, at the time, going going up and down both sides of Hollywood Boulevard twice a day and witnessing to people. I felt that direct contact with people was superior to doing concerts because I saw such immediate results with my preaching and rarely perceived any response to my singing.
Audiences used to sit there, staring at me like this music was an alien language, incomprehensible to their thinking. Only one or two people would come up and seem excited by what they had heard. The rest of the audience, after clapping politely, would shuffle out of the concert hall and Go home. The effects of preaching seemed so much more powerful as I prayed with person after person on the sidewalk each day. I vowed to give up music entirely and spend the rest of my life preaching, so I locked up my guitar and tape recorder in the closet and devoted myself to the streets.
One night I found myself singing in my sleep. I woke myself up with the sound of my voice. I tried to dislodge the song from my mind but could not. Finally in desperation I went to the closet, retrieved the tape recorder and sang into it. That, having been done, made it possible for me to go back to sleep. A couple of weeks later I remembered having made up a song in my sleep. I was curious to see if it made any sense, now that I was fully awake. Still believing it to be a faltering moment in my resolve, and even thinking that the Devil was trying to coerce me into writing music once again, I was quite surprised at how pathetic and manipulative the Devil was... giving me a song which praised God... as a ruse for tricking me back into doing music once again.
It was only later that I began wondering if perhaps God didn't want me to give up music, and that it had only been something that I was trying to stop doing. The Bible says to "test the spirits" to see if they are from God so I decided to write another song and see what it was like. I wrote "I Wish We'd All Been Ready". It seemed quite unlike any song I'd ever written, and different from any song I'd ever heard.
So I wrote another song. "Ha Ha World" was a very strange song, as was "The Last Supper". Then "Forget Your Hexagram" came to me. By now it dawned on me that, possibly, because I had completely given up my music to God... it was almost like He had cleansed it and given it back to me. I had changed during those months. My musical ability had been transformed without any effort on my part. So I gave up my decision to abandon music and incorporated it into my street preaching, sometimes singing for passers-by when I wasn't prowling the Boulevard trying to discern who next to talk with.
