why don't you look into jesus
[Go to Song Page]
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup
You drown your sorrows till you can't stand up
Take a look at what you've done to yourself
Why don't ya, you put the bottle back on the shelf
Yellow fingered from your cigarettes
Your hands are shaking while your body sweats
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Gonorrhea on Valentine’s day, VD
And you're still looking for the perfect lay
You think rock and roll will set you free
Honey, you'll be deaf before you're thirty three
Shooting junk till you're half insane
A broken needle in your purple vein
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Work all night
Sleep all day
You take your money
Throw it all away
You say you're gonna be a superstar
But you never hung around enough
To find out who you really are
Ah ah ow-ah-ow ow aw ah wow
Ah ah ah-ah-ow ah ah ah uh ooh
Think back to when you were a child
Your soul was free, your heart ran wild
Each day was different and life was a thrill
You knew tomorrow would be better still
But things have changed, you're much older now
If you're unhappy and you don't know how
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Yes he does
Why don't you look into Jesus
He got the answer
Check it for yourself

the outlaw
[Go to Song Page]
Some say he was an outlaw
That he roamed across the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few old fishermen
No one knew just where he came from
Or exactly what he'd done
But they said it must be something bad
That kept him on the run
Some say he was a poet
That he'd stand upon the hill
And his voice could calm an angry crowd
Or make the waves stand still
That he spoke in many parables
That few could understand
But the people sat for hours
Just to listen to this man
Some say he was a sorcerer
A man of mystery
He could walk upon the water
He could make a blind man see
That he conjured wine at weddings
And did tricks with fish and bread
That he talked of being born again
And raised people from the dead
Some say a politician
Who spoke of being free
He was followed by the masses
On the shores of Galilee
He spoke out against corruption
And he bowed to no decree
And they feared his strength and power
So they nailed him to a tree
Some say he was the son of God
A man above all men
But he came to be a servant
And to set us free from sin
And that's who I believe he was
'Cause that's who I believe
And I think we should get ready
'Cause it's time for us to leave
Some say he was an outlaw
That he roamed across the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few old fishermen
No one knew just where he came from
Or exactly what he'd done
But they said it must be something bad

i've got to learn to live without you
[Go to Song Page]
You came into my life
You took me off the shelf
You told my name to me
And taught me what to do
But then you went away
And left me by myself
I feel completely lost
And lonely without you
Why'd you go, baby
I guess you know
I've got to learn to live without you
I've got to learn to live without you
I've got to learn to live without you
Without you
Today I thought I saw you
Walking down the street
With someone else
I turned my head and faced the wall
I started crying
And my heart fell to my feet
But when I looked again
It wasn't you at all
Why'd you go, baby
I guess you know
I've got to learn to live without you
I've got to learn to live without you
I've got to learn to live without you
Without you
It's just no good without you [x3]
I've got to learn to live without you [x7]
You came into my life
You took me off the shelf
You told my name to me
And taught me what to do
But then you went away
And left me by myself
I feel completely lost
And lonely without you
Why'd you go, baby
I guess you know
I've got to learn to live without you
I've got to learn to live without you
I've got to learn to live without you

I've got to learn to live without you

without love you are nothing
[Go to Song Page]
You can be a righteous rocker
Or a holy roller
You can be most anything
You can be a Leon Russell
Or a super muscle
You can be a corporate king
You can be a wealthy man from Texas
Or a witch with heavy hexes
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain't nothing without love
You can be a brilliant surgeon
Or a sweet young virgin
Or a harlot out to sell
You can learn to play the blues
Or be Howard Hughes
Or the Scarlet Pimpernel
Or you can be a French provincial midwife
Or go from door to door with a death knife
But without love you ain't nothing
You ain't nothing without love
Without love you ain't nothing
Without love
(Without love you ain't nothing)
(You ain't nothing without love)
Without love you ain't nothing
Without love
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
An' you can be a woman feeler
Or a baby stealer
You can drink your life away
Or you can be a holy prophet
Get a blessing off it
You can fast for fifty days
You can shake hands with the devil
Or give your life to God on the level
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain’t nothing without love, love
Without love you ain't nothing
(You ain't nothing without love)
Without love you ain’t nothing
Without love
Now you could be a righteous rocker (Without love)
And eh, that's right
(Without love) Or you could be a holy roller
You ain't nothing without love (Without love)
Without love
Without love (Without love)
You ain't nothing without love
You can be a righteous rocker
Or a holy roller
You can be most anything
You can be a Leon Russell

i wish we'd all been ready
[Go to Song Page]
Life was filled with guns and war
And everyone got trampled on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold
A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
A man and wife asleep in bed
She hears a noise and turns her head, he's gone
I wish we'd all been ready
Two men walking up a hill
One disappears and one's left standing still
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
The son has come and you've been left behind
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
La la
Life was filled with guns and war
And everyone got trampled on the floor
I wish we'd all been ready
Children died, the days grew cold
A piece of bread could buy a bag of gold
I wish we'd all been ready
There's no time to change your mind
How could you have been so blind
The father spoke, the demons dined
The son has come and you've been left behind
You've been left behind [x3]
(Ah ah ah) [Repeated and harmonised to end]

six o'clock news
[Go to Song Page]
Will passengers to flight eighty five proceed to gate number nine. Please have your boarding cards ready [Spoken]
I got a ticket for southeast Asia
I packed my camera and press card badge
They only paid me to stay the weekend
What if I never come back
The flight was pretty rough
I got a room, took a sauna
The bellboy gook put my bags on the bed
He left without his tip
Then I loaded up my Hasselblad full of film
And I stepped outside, I stepped outside
I'm taking pictures of burning houses
Color movies of misery
I see the flash of guns, how red the mud becomes
I've got a close-up view
I'm the six o'clock news
What can I do
All those kids without shoes
What can I do
Military coups
What can I do
I'm just the six o'clock news
I got a suite at the Saigon Hilton
Cocktail parties with Premiere Ky
We talk about how the war is going
And watch his color TV
I'm the six o'clock news
But what can I do
Drinking black market booze
What can I do
I'm red and white and true blue
What can I do
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am
The six o'clock news
Catch my plane flight back to the mainland
I fall asleep to the engine's drone
I see the flash of guns, how red the mud becomes
I've got a close-up view
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am
The six o'clock news
What can I do
Guerilla rendezvous
And what can I do
All those kids without shoes
What can I do
Napalm tattoos
What can I do
What can I do
What can I do
I'm just the six o'clock news, oo-ugh
What can I do
I am, I am, I am, I am, I am
The six o'clock

the great american novel
[Go to Song Page]
I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free
In a land that poured its love out on the moon
And I grew up in the shadows
Of your silos filled with grain
But you never helped to fill my empty spoon
And when I was ten you murdered law
With courtroom politics
And you learned to make a lie sound just like truth
But I know you better now
And I don't fall for all your tricks
And you've lost the one advantage of my youth
You kill a black man at midnight
Just for talking to your daughter
Then you make his wife your mistress
And you leave her without water
And the sheet you wear upon your face
Is the sheet your children sleep on
And at every meal you say a prayer
You don't believe but still you keep on
And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You are far across the ocean
In a war that's not your own
And while you're winning theirs
You're gonna lose the one at home
Do you really think the only way
To bring about the peace
Is to sacrifice your children
And kill all your enemies
The politicians all make speeches
While the news men all take notes
And they exaggerate the issues
As they shove it down our throats
Is it really up to them
Whether this country sinks or floats
Well I wonder who would lead us
If none of us would vote
Hmm
Well my phone is tapped and my lips are chapped
From whispering through the fence
You know every move I make
Or is that just coincidence
Will you try to make my way of life
A little less like jail
If I promise to make tapes and slides
And send them through the mail
And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You say all men are equal, all men are brothers
Then why are the rich more equal than others
Don't ask me for the answers, I've only got one
That a man leaves his darkness when he follows the son
I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free

pardon me
[Go to Song Page]
Pardon me
Kissing you like I'm afraid
But I know I'm being played with
And you'll leave me when you get the chance
Off you'll go
In the darkness of the night
Like a bird in freedom's flight
You're thinking only of deliverance
Close your eyes
And pretend that you are me
See how empty it can be
Making love if love's not really there
Watch me go
Watch me walk away alone
As your clothing comes undone
And you pull the ribbons from your hair
Pardon me
Pardon me
Kissing you like I'm afraid
But I know I'm being played with
And you'll leave me when you get the chance
Off you'll go
In the darkness of the night

why should the devil have all the good music
[Go to Song Page]
A one two a one two three
I want the people to know
That he saved my soul
But I still like to listen to the radio
They say rock and roll is wrong
We'll give you one more chance
I say I feel so good I gotta get up and dance
I know what's right, I know what's wrong
I don't confuse it
All I'm really trying to say is
Why should the devil have all the good music
An’ I feel good every day
Because Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
They say to cut my hair
They're driving me insane
I grew it out long to make room for my brain
But sometimes people don't understand
What's a good boy doing in a rock and roll band
There's nothing wrong with playing blues licks
Well if you've got a reason, tell me to my face
Why should the devil have all the good music
There's nothing wrong with what I play, aaaah
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away
Allright
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that has a beat
I ain't knocking the hymns
Just give me a song that moves my feet
I don't like none of those funeral marches
I ain't dead yet
Wow
Jesus told the truth
An’ Jesus showed the way
There's one more thing I'd like to say
They nailed him to the cross
And they laid him in the ground
But they shoulda known you can't keep a good man down
I feel good every day
I don't wanna lose it
All I wanna, all I wanna know is
Why should the devil have all the good music
I been filled, I feel okay
Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues
Ah Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues
Ah Jesus is the rock and he rolled my blues away, yeah
A one two a one two three
I want the people to know
That he saved my soul

Four [Spoken]
Alice is a drag queen
Bowie's somewhere in between
Other bands are looking mean
Me, I'm trying to stay clean
I don't dig the radio
I hate what the charts pick
Rock and roll may not be dead
But it's getting sick
All over the world disc jockeys talk the same
And every town I play is like the one from where I came
The Rolling Stones are millionaires
Flower children pallbearers
Beatles said all you need is love
And then they broke up
Jimi took an overdose
Janis followed so close
The whole music scene and
All the bands are pretty comatose
This time last year, people didn't wanna hear
They looked at Jesus from afar
This year he's a superstar
Dear John, who's more popular now
I've been listening to Paul's records
I think he really is dead
It's 1973, I wonder who we're gonna see
Who's in power now
I think I'll turn on the TV
The man on the news said
China's gonna beat us
We shot all our dreamers
And there's no one left to lead us
We need a solution, we need salvation
Let's send some people to the moon
And gather information
They brought back a big bag of rocks
Only cost thirteen billion
Must be nice rocks
You think it's such a sad thing
When you see a fallen king
Then you find out they're only princes to begin with
And everybody has to choose
Whether they'll win or lose
Follow God or sing the blues
And who they're gonna sin with
What a mess the world is in
I wonder who began it
Don't ask me, I'm only visiting this planet
This world is not my home
I'm just passing through

And there's no one left to lead us
We need a solution, we need salvation
Let's send some people to the moon
And gather information
They brought back a big bag of rocks
Only cost thirteen billion
Must be nice rocks
You think it's such a sad thing
When you see a fallen king
Then you find out they're only princes to begin with
And everybody has to choose
Whether they'll win or lose
Follow God or sing the blues
And who they're gonna sin with
What a mess the world is in
I wonder who began it
Don't ask me, I'm only visiting this planet
This world is not my home
I'm just passing through
oh how i love you [unlisted track]
[Go to Song Page]
Oh how I love you
The words they don't come easily
How I love you
You've opened my eyes
And I can see
The love that's waiting for me
Oh how I love you
The words they don't come easily
How I love you
You've opened my eyes
And I can see
The love that's waiting for me
The track listing above relates to all of the Verve / MGM based LPs (US, UK, South Africa, Focus, Rhema, DTS and Myrrh), which are musically identical except for:
Unlike the corresponding LPs, the Focus and Myrrh cassettes both omit Oh How I Love You. The Focus cassette has the same botched fade out on I Wish We'd All Been Ready as the LP does, but otherwise actually seems to use the same master as the DTS LP, with a reversed stereo image throughout and with some songs having a slightly faster play speed
- Minor song gap differences
- The Focus / Rhema versions botch the fade out on I Wish We'd All Been Ready. It ends abruptly rather than fading to silence
- The DTS version omits Oh How I Love You and has a reversed stereo image throughout. Several (but strangely not all) songs seem to play slightly faster, resulting in them being a little shorter time wise
- The UK (MGM and Myrrh) and South African versions have a much longer gap between Reader's Digest and Oh How I Love You. The UK MGM version also has a faint sound a second or two before I Wish We'd All Been Ready. Note that the UK MGM and South African pressings were cut / mastered by the legendary George Peckham

Street Level and Phydeaux LPs
These are musically identical to the Verve / MGM versions, except that I've Got To Learn To Live Without You and Why Don't You Look Into Jesus swap position, and Oh How I Love You is removed. Also, Without Love You Are Nothing is retitled Righteous Rocker #1, and Six O'Clock News is retitled I Am The Six O'Clock News
Intriguingly, the Phydeaux cassettes do include Oh How I Love You**. Even more intriguingly, the DeTracey Street cassette edits the song down to about half the length. The Lucy Way and Hector Lane cassettes reinstate the full length version
** Apart from the 1980 'The Trilogy Part 1' cassette, which as well as omitting Oh How I Love You, uses the MGM running order

- The "four" right at the start of Reader's Digest is removed
- I Wish We'd All Been Ready ends slightly earlier. Further, the track split between it and Six O'Clock News is botched
- Oh How I Love You ends earlier, and the track split between it and PeacePollutionRevolution is botched. The entire count in to the latter is before the split

One two, one two three [Spoken]
The word is revolution
But no one’s fired the shot
Each side has its battle plan
With detailed counterplot
And the world is closely watching
As we near the battle line
But if you’re truly wise
You’ll keep your eyes on Palestine
The water is polluted
And the air is filled with death
Some day it won’t be easy
To stop and catch your breath
But it’s all in Revelation
It’s part of the design
'N if you’re truly wise
You’ll keep your eyes on Palestine
Sha la la la la la la la la la [x4]
Well I marched for peace in Washington
Things were getting hot
Then I gave blood in Chicago
Went anaemic on the spot
I woulda hitch-hiked to Toronto, John
But it’s all a waste of time
So I’m writing down this song to you
To sing and pass along to you
If you’re truly wise
You’ll keep your eyes on Palestine
Sha la la la la la la la la la
Revolution

righteous rocker (rough mix)
[Go to Song Page]
One two three [Spoken]
You can be a righteous rocker or a holy roller
You can be 'most anything
You can be a Leon Russell or a super muscle
You can be a corporate king
You can be a wealthy man from Texas
Or a witch with heavy hexes
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain't nothing without love
You can be a brilliant surgeon or a sweet young virgin
Or a harlot out to sell
You can learn to play the blues or be Howard Hughes
Or the Scarlet Pimpernel
You can be a French provincial midwife
Or go from door to door with a death knife
But without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain't nothing without love
Without love
You ain't nothing without love (you ain't nothing without love) oh no
Without love
You ain't nothing without love
Break
Hoo hoo hoo ooh ooh
Oh, you can be a woman feeler
Or a baby stealer
You can drink your life away
You can be a holy prophet
Get a blessing off it
You can fast for fifty days
You can shake hands with the devil
Or give your life to God on the level
But without love
You ain't nothing without love (you ain't nothing without love)
Without love

(Without love you ain't nothing without love) Stop looking at the stars, you don't live under the signs
(Without love you ain't nothing without love) Don't mess with gypsies or have your fortune read
(Without love without love) Keep your table on the floor and don't you listen to the dead
You can't hitch-hike your way to heaven, the devil's closed the road
You live once, you die once, with no reincarnate episode
You can't hitch-hike to heaven or get there by being good

the outlaw (alternate version)
[Go to Song Page]
Some say he was an outlaw
That he roamed across the land
With a band of unschooled ruffians
And a few young fishermen
No one knew just where he came from
Or exactly what he'd done
But they said it might be something bad
That keeps him on the run
Some say he was a poet
That he'd stand upon the hill
And his words could calm an angry crowd
Or make the waves stand still
That he spoke in many parables
That few could understand
But the people sat for hours
Just to listen to this man
Yo-oh oh
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh [x2]
Some say he was a sorcerer
A man of mystery
He could walk upon the water
He could make a blind man see
And he conjured wine at weddings
And did tricks with fish and bread
He spoke of being born again
And raised people from the dead
Hmm-mm-mm-hmm-mm
Some say he was a radical
Who spoke of being free
He was followed by the masses
On the shores of Galilee
He spoke out against corruption
And bowed to no decree
And they feared his strength and power
So they nailed him to a tree
Some say he was the son of God
A man above all men
But he came to be a servant
And to set us free from sin
And that's who I believe he was
'Cause that's who I believe
And I think we should be ready
When it's time for us to leave
Oh yes I think we should get ready
Because it's almost time to leave
[Faint humming for most of the remainder of the song]

reader's digest (rock version)
[Go to Song Page]
Alice is a drag queen
Bowie's somewhere in between
Other bands are looking mean
Me, I'm trying to stay clean
I don't dig the radio
I hate what the charts pick
Rock and roll may not be dead
But it's really sick
All over the world disc jockeys talk the same
And every town I play is like the town from where I came
Except for this town
I always say that
Rolling Stones are millionaires
Flower children pallbearers
Beatles said all you need is love
Then they broke up
Jimi took an overdose
Janis followed so close
The whole music scene
All the bands are pretty comatose
This time last year, people didn't wanna hear
They looked at Jesus from afar
Now they call him superstar
Dear John
Never mind
I've been listening t' some of Paul's new records
Never mind
It's 1973, I wonder who we're gonna see
Who's in power now
Think I'll turn on the TV
Man on the news said
China's gonna beat us
We shot all our dreamers
There's no one left to lead us
We need a solution, some kinda salvation
Let's send some people to the moon
And gather information
They brought back a big bag of rocks
Only cost two hundred forty seven billion
Must be nice rocks
You think it's such a sad thing
When you see a fallen king
Then you find out they're only princes to begin with
Everybody's got to choose
Whether they will win or lose
Follow God or sing the blues

the great american novel (unreleased version)
[Go to Song Page]
I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free
In a land that poured its love out on the moon
And I grew up in the shadows
Of your silos filled with grain
But you never helped to fill my empty spoon
And when I was ten you murdered law
With courtroom politics
And you learned to make a lie sound just like truth
But I know you better now
And I don't fall for all your tricks
And you've lost the one advantage of my youth
You kill a black man at midnight
Just for talking to your daughter
Then you make his wife your mistress
And you leave her without water
And the sheet you wear upon your face
Is the sheet your children sleep on
And at every meal you say a prayer
You don't believe but still you keep on
And your money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You are far across the ocean
In a war that's not your own
And while you're winning theirs
You're gonna lose the one at home
Do you really think the only way
To bring about the peace
Is to sacrifice your children
And kill all your enemies
The politicians all make speeches
While the news men all take notes
And they exaggerate the issues
As they shove it down our throat
Is it really up to them
Whether this country sinks or floats
Well I wonder who would lead us
If none of us would vote
Hmm
(Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh)
Well my phone is tapped and my lips are chapped (Ooh)
From whispering through the fence
You know every move I make
Or is that just coincidence
Will you try to make my way of life
A little less like jail
If I promise to make tapes and slides (Ah ah)
And send them through the mail (Ah)
[Skip/glitch]
Money says in God we trust
But it's against the law to pray in school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved your children to do it
You say all men are equal, all men are brothers
Then why are the rich more equal than others
Don't ask me for the answers, I've only got one
That a man leaves his darkness when he follows the son

Billboard review, February 10th 1973: In a sense, this LP is misleading because it's mostly religious in nature. However, the music is all definitely rock. And there’s one song on this LP that puts it firmly on the map as an album to be reckoned with- “Reader's Digest.” The song is sort of a disertation on the pop music scene, discussing everything from Alice Cooper and Bowie to the Rolling Stones and warrants heavy Top 40 airplay. Dealers: LP comes with special deluxe jacket and a complete set of printed lyrics.

US MGM / Verve Tri-fold Cover:
The initial US pressings came with a tri-fold sleeve. The images above show the additional flap, along with some examples of stickers on the rear. Some rear covers have a green tinge. Promotional copies usually have a 'Promotion only' or 'DJ' sticker on the rear. Some stock copies also had stickers, and some of these were even used to cover up the Promotion only of DJ stickers. The trifold sleeve was later replaced by a standard gatefold one, identical other than the missing flap

Matrix: Side 1 etched '2304-145-A' and '2YS-3147'. Side 2 etched '2304-145-B' and '2YS-3148' Note that whilst most LP labels seem to be printed in two stages - the release specific text printed on top of the record company standard background - the Focus labels are made up of several separate release specific text sections. This is evidenced by the fact that the relative position of one section of text compared with another can differ from copy to copy. As an example, comparing Robert Termorshuizen's copy shown to the right with mine above, the catalogue number section of text on mine is significantly more to the right when viewed against the title and track list sections above and below it |

Scrapbook Planet is an insert that was included with the early Street Level vinyl re-issues of the album. There were two versions that gave differing details of the "Compleat Trilogy" - one on glossy paper and the other on low grade newspaper style paper
Larry, in 1980: 'Only Visiting This Planet' is the first part of the trilogy and represents the present. On the front cover, I find myself standing in the middle of New York City, with buildings and traffic pressed around me and my hand on my head kind of saying what is going on in this life? Is this really earth? And the back cover is me visiting the site of a previous civilisation with its own monoliths, not skyscrapers, but amazing architecturally sound structures just the same.
