lyrics versions 1, 4 and 5
Pardon me
Kissing you like I'm afraid
But I know I'm being played with
And you'll leave me when you get the chance
Off you'll go
In the darkness of the night
Like a bird in freedom's flight
You're thinking only of deliverance
Close your eyes
And pretend that you are me
See how empty it can be
Making love if love's not really there
Watch me go
Watch me walk away alone
As your clothing comes undone
And you pull the ribbons from your hair
Pardon me
Kissing you like I'm afraid
But I know I'm being played with
And you'll leave me when you get the chance
Off you'll go
In the darkness of the night
Like a bird in freedom's flight
You're thinking only of deliverance
Close your eyes
And pretend that you are me
See how empty it can be
Making love if love's not really there
Watch me go
Watch me walk away alone
As your clothing comes undone
And you pull the ribbons from your hair
Pardon me
lyrics version 2

Larry takes what is traditionally a woman's complaint (being pressured for sex by the male) and examines it from his own perspective.
Written in 1967 in response to a very young girl who had slipped me a note with her name, address and phone number on it - she made me very sad. Neither my manager nor People! thought the song had any merit.
