lyrics version 1
Oh no, they'd never let me go to no dances, no sir Paul, you're not supposed to dance. Not supposed to dances. They had nice parties. [Spoken by grandma Rubie]
I grew up in San Francisco, an all black neighbourhood. I remember it very well. I was not allowed to dance. But in my room I could move around if I felt like it, and had the chance. I started playing music when I was five, 1952, writing down my feelings. Everybody's life is different, and so's mine. Isn't that right grandma? [Spoken by Larry]
My feet are on a rock, my name is on a roll
But moving and a grooving does not satisfy my soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own
When I feel moved I dance before the throne
Just like David [Spoken]
My friends think that I’m strange
Guess they think that I’m a fool
You know they look at me in church
And they laugh at me in school
But I believe someone rolled away the stone
And I am not alone
So when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving does not satisfy my soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own
When I feel moved I dance before the throne
Just like David [Spoken]
Some people think I’m strange
Yeah they think I’m some kind of fool
You know they shake their heads in church
And they laugh at me in school
But I believe someone rolled away that stone
And I am not alone
So when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing, ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone (Dum bum bum dum bum bum bum)
I have got the Lord and I am not alone (Dum bum bum dum bum bum bum)
So if you knock me down (Ooh woo woo woo)
Oh brother I will not fight you back (Ya ya ya ya, woo wo-wo wo-wo woo-oh wo wo)
You know God loves all his children (Wo woo woo woo)
Red, white, yellow, brown and black (Wo-oh oh oh oh oh)
Go Charley go
My my my, such a little boy too, mmm hmm
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving never satisfies my soul
Don’t wanna do the stroll
When I’m down I go off on my own
And I am not alone
When I feel moved I dance before the throne
Mmm mm mm
Back off Jimmy, it’s not wrong
This kind of music comes from the church not from the devil
Now I hope you heared me
Good night
God bless you
But moving and a grooving does not satisfy my soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own
When I feel moved I dance before the throne
Just like David [Spoken]

When I feel moved I dance before the throne
lyrics versions 4 and 13
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving, it does not satisfy my soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own, yes I do
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at the church, the kids down at school
You know they think that I'm half crazy, they act like I'm a fool
But when I'm down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing, ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword but David had a stone
And I have got the Lord, so I am not alone
If you knock me down, brother I will not fight you back
'Cos God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
Take it Charley, take it [Spoken]
Well my feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
Moving and a grooving, it does not satisfy your soul
But if you're down brother, sister
Go off on your own
And when you feel the need just dance before the throne
But moving and a grooving, it does not satisfy my soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own, yes I do
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at the church, the kids down at school
You know they think that I'm half crazy, they act like I'm a fool
But when I'm down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne

lyrics version 6
One day my pastor said I believe in rock and roll
And the congregation stopped breathing
I believe in rock and roll and I'm going-a tell you what I believe
I believe my feet are on the rock and my name is on the roll [Spoken, over band intro]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
Moving and a grooving, it won't satisfy your soul
But when I’m down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at my church, my friends down at the school
They think that I'm half crazy, they act like I'm a fool
But I believe, I believe, I believe it in my soul
So when I feel the need I just dance before the throne
Oh yeah
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone
I have got the Lord so I am not alone
If you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
'Cos God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
Alright
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving it will never truly satisfy your soul
But if you feel empty, if you feel down, if you wanna get close to the Lord
Go into your room, go into your closet and pray
And if you feel the need you just dance before
Dance before
Oh dance before God's throne, woh
And the congregation stopped breathing
I believe in rock and roll and I'm going-a tell you what I believe
I believe my feet are on the rock and my name is on the roll [Spoken, over band intro]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
Moving and a grooving, it won't satisfy your soul
But when I’m down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne

Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone
I have got the Lord so I am not alone
If you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
'Cos God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
Alright
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving it will never truly satisfy your soul
But if you feel empty, if you feel down, if you wanna get close to the Lord
Go into your room, go into your closet and pray
And if you feel the need you just dance before
Dance before
Oh dance before God's throne, woh
lyrics version 7
I just changed, I don't have to do this up [Spoken]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving does not satisfy my soul
So if I’m down I go off on my own, ah ba bow
And if I feel the need I dance before the throne, yeah
People think I’m strange
I guess they think that I'm a fool
You know they shake their heads in church
Laugh at me in school
I believe someone rolled away the stone
And I can't help it, it's what I believe. I believe it [Spoken]
If I feel the need I dance before the throne
Yeah, just like David

lyrics version 8
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving, it won't satisfy your soul
When you're down, go off on your own
'Cause when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Yeah see em, in Sunday school they said that dancing was wrong but then, then we had this story about David dancing before God. Oh you've heard of David? So it was confusing you know, it, it, um, the church where I grew up ah, eh, in, eh, was, I dunno, they said a lotta things like it's wrong to drink and eh, you know and then in Sunday school they taught us that Jesus changed the water into wine. And I thought well maybe he turned it back into water before it hit their stomachs. I just, I didn't know, I was confused. You know they said it was wrong to go to the movies, but on, on eh, on television we could watch the movies. Why was it wrong to go to the movies? But hey would, when I was, at that age we didn't even have television, it hadn't been introduced to the market yet so eh, I just thought [coughs] it's wrong to go to the movies. I don't understand why but then, you know, I thought, at one point I thought well maybe that's why they call it cinema, so you'll know. So I didn't see anything wrong with dancing but I just, I would go into my room and dance because I didn't want anybody to think I wasn't a christian. [Spoken]
The people at my church, my friends down at the school
Sometimes they think I'm crazy, I guess they think that I'm a fool
But I believe someone rolled away that stone
When I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go

I have got the Lord, I am not alone
If you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
'Cause God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
I learned that in Sunday school too [Spoken]
Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Red and yellow, black and white
They are precious in his sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world
My neighbourhood, most of the kids were black. I was white. Well we were poor, we lived in a slum. Wasn't until years later my dad earned enough money we could move into a white ghetto. This eh coloured kid one time asked me are you an albino? I thought am I an albino? And I told him no I'm a Norman, we live on the corner [Spoken]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
Moving and a grooving, doesn't satisfy your soul
If you're down, I go off on my own
'Cause when I feel the need I just dance before the throne
But moving and a grooving, it won't satisfy your soul
When you're down, go off on your own
'Cause when I feel the need I dance before the throne

[Starts playing song]
It wasn't a very popular thing to be a christian back in the fifties, which is strange because everybody said they were. But then to talk about Jesus, that wasn't something they were prepared to listen to at school, at work. Anyway, this song's for my pastor [Spoken]
My feet are on a rock, my name is on a roll
But moving and a grooving it don't satisfy my soul
But when I’m down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne

Yeah I forgot to tell you that dancing was wrong too. That's what this song is about, it's about dancing. You know in Sunday school they taught us that David danced before the throne, but then in the grown ups eh church service they told us that dancing was wrong. So I thought you just have to make sure nobody's watching you if you do it. And as I got older I realised that baptists felt that eh dancing was like a perpendicular expression of a horizontal desire. So that's why I wrote this song [Spoken]
My feet are on a rock, my name is on a roll
But moving and a grooving, it will just never satisfy your soul
Well if you're down just go off on your own, yeah
And if you feel the need
Just dance before the throne

lyrics version 11
This is back in 1958, Elvis Presley you know was trying to steal the church's music in 1956, and I had this crazy idea as a nine year old that I needed to try to steal it back. Two years later pastor said I believe in rock and roll. And everyone got real quiet. In, in our church you know, we didn't believe in dancing, our church. He said I believe in rock and roll, this is what I believe, I believe, you know what he said. He said my feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll. And I thought man that's a really good idea for a song. And I didn't know anything about plagiarism back then, so I took Elvis Presley's song Let's Have A Party and just rearranged it a little bit [Spoken]
My feet are on a rock, my name is on a roll
But moving and a grooving, it just don't satisfy my soul
But when I’m down I just go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at my church
My friends down at the school
They think I am crazy mama
They think that I'm a fool
But I believe someone rolled away that stone
When I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone
I have got the Lord, I am not alone
If you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
'Cause God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
Alright boys
My feet are on a rock
That's Herbie [Spoken]
Okay Kenny [Spoken]
Woo
My feet are on a rock boy, sounds good
My name is on a roll
Moving and a grooving it will just never satisfy your ho-ho-soul
If you feel sad
Put you closer to God
Go in your room, go in your closet
Go off by yourself all alone
Try it, try it, try it
And if you feel the need just dance before God's throne
My feet are on a rock, my name is on a roll
But moving and a grooving, it just don't satisfy my soul
But when I’m down I just go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne

Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing ‘cause he saved my soul
Goliath had a sword, David had a stone
I have got the Lord, I am not alone
If you knock me down
Brother I will not fight you back
'Cause God loves all his children
Red, white, yellow, brown and black
Alright boys
My feet are on a rock
That's Herbie [Spoken]
Okay Kenny [Spoken]
Woo
My feet are on a rock boy, sounds good
My name is on a roll
Moving and a grooving it will just never satisfy your ho-ho-soul
If you feel sad
Put you closer to God
Go in your room, go in your closet
Go off by yourself all alone
Try it, try it, try it
And if you feel the need just dance before God's throne
lyrics version 12

[Guitar starts]
Just slow it down a little
[Sighs]
It was against the rules to dance at my church. Well, lotta stuff was a sin, you know, it was a sin to smoke, which was okay by me. And a sin to a drink. My grandpa let me have a sip of beer and um that was the last sip I ever had. That stuff's bad. Maybe it's better for you than Diet Coke though
And then I found out that uh there was something in San Francisco where we lived um, movie theaters. Well I had never been to one and I asked about it and then found out that it was a sin to go to the movies. In fact that's why they called it cinema, so you'd know
And in Sunday school they taught us that David, King David, danced before the throne. And I thought well, eh, that's wrong. But I'd figured out it was okay if nobody saw you. So I'd go in my room and I'd dance. Not because I really wanted to, I'd never had any interest in it until they said you shouldn't do it [Spoken]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on a roll, yea-eh-eh-eh-eh
Moving and a grooving, it don't satisfy my soul
When I’m down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at my church
My friends down at the school
They think that I am crazy Lord
They think that I'm a fool
But I believe someone rolled away the stone
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go
I feel like dancing, he saved my soul

Well my feet are on a rock, my name is on a roll
Moving and a grooving, it will never really satisfy your soul
When I’m down I just go off into my room
I get all alone, that's right
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Just slow it down a little

Some people like to rock, some people like to roll
Moving and a grooving really satisfies your soul
Let's have a party, let's have a part'
You know that song anybody? Yeah. 'Kay so anyway I didn't know anything about plagiarism at that time in my life. But I thought he, well this is the perfect example of how they've got it wrong. Eh I'm gonna put this in a biblical perspective here, so I wrote this song [Spoken]
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
And moving and a grooving, it don't satisfy your soul
So when I’m down I go off on my own
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at my church, my friends down at the school
They think that I am strange, they probably think that I’m a fool
But when I [coughs] believe God rolled away that stone yeh-yeh-ye-eh
So when I feel the need I dance before the throne
Take it easy, nice and slow
Feel his presence, don’t you know
If he says follow, I will go

Ah ba ba ba ba [ETC]
I grew up in the church an' I knew what I was supposed to do
Please men but I'd rather please God and
Feet are on the rock
Yeah yeah yeah
My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll
But moving and a grooving don't satisfy my soul
So when I dance I go off on my own
Yes I do
And when I feel the need I dance before the throne
The people at my church
The friends down at the school
They think that I’m half crazy
Yeah they act like I’m a fool
When I dance
I wanna be alone
I don't need no girl, don't need no music, don't need nothing
I wanna be alone
When I feel the need, yes I just dance before the throne
Some people like to rock, some people like to roll
But moving and a grooving it does not satisfy my soul
When I dance ar-ra-r-a-r-a-r-a go off on my own
Yes I do, yes I do
When I feel the need I dance before the throne
[Mimics harmonica solo]
But when I feel the need you know I dance before the throne
I grew up in the church an' I knew what I was supposed to do

But when I feel the need you know I dance before the throne
I’ve written a song about it, about dancing before the Lord. It’s called My Feet Are On The Rock, it’s an old one. This minister in 1958, rock and roll had been around for, Elvis had been around for two years and this minister one day said I believe in rock and roll. And the congregation was really, like stunned. And he said I’ll tell you what I believe. I believe my feet are on the rock, and my name is on the roll. And then everybody thought oh, that’s a good way of putting it. But I thought yeah, yeah, that’s right. It had nothing to do with the play on words, I just thought yeah, I know whom I have believed. And I’m a christian, I don’t care about Elvis Presley at all, I think he’s stupid. Of course I was only ten years old at the time, and I didn’t understand why girls thought he was dreamy. I liked that song he sang about a dog. ‘Cos I wanted a dog, I liked dogs. But I really didn’t care about his songs about uh, are you lonely tonight? I mean, you know, I’m ten years old, I’m not lonely.
So after our pastor gave that sermon I thought I’m gonna write a song about this. My feet are on the rock, my name is on the roll. And when I feel moved I go off on my own. I go into my room and I dance before the throne. So it was definitely a focussed thought. I knew it wasn’t wrong to dance, but everybody at church said it was so I thought OK. And I didn’t even know they were talking about dancing with girls. I’d never been to a dance, I’d never seen a dance. I just thought they meant moving. But see I knew David danced before the Lord, we learned that in Sunday school. So how could they be saying upstairs in the main sanctuary that it’s wrong to dance, but David danced before the Lord. And if it’s so wrong why would they put that in the bible? Or if it was in the bible, if it’s wrong why would they tell us kids? So I thought OK that must be the only way it’s right is just to go off on your own, to be alone and dance before the Lord, where only he can see you.
