lyrics versions 1, 2 and 5
I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real, I don't pretend
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Life is no one's friend
But when we met I felt so free
And suddenly I felt a change come over me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
I don't believe in miracles
I've been around, I've seen enough
The only way to get along you must be strong
You must be tough
Life is one big bluff
But then you opened up the door
An' I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
Pa [x35]
But then you opened up the door
An' I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor
Do you suppose
I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real, I don't pretend
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Life is no one's friend
But then we met and suddenly
I felt so strange
I felt a change come over me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me
I know what's real, I don't pretend
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Life is no one's friend
But when we met I felt so free
And suddenly I felt a change come over me
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me

I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real
I don't pretend, oh no
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end

But then you opened up the door
And I walked right in and all my fears fell on the floor
Do you suppose a miracle is happening to me

But then you smiled and suddenly
I felt so strange, I felt a change come over me
Do you suppose
I don't believe in miracles
I know what's real
I don't pretend, oh no
I don't believe in miracles
Or stories with a happy end
Life is no one's friend
Ah-ah

Next is a song which contends with the aspects of doubt and faith. It is an examination of the vacillation of certainty which faces many neophytes who find themselves poised on the edge of conversion. They want to reach out across the chasm of hope and grab onto God's hand but are haunted by certain self-doubts with questions like:
"Is this really what I am ready to do?"
"Am I going to stick with this?"
"What if I step forward and there's nothing there?"
"What if God doesn't really want me?"
"What if l'm just responding emotionally?"
"What if there is no God?"
''Can such a wonderful thing really be happening?"
''ls this just all in my imagination?"
"Do you suppose a miracle could happen to me?"
I wanted people to realize that the kinds of doubts they had were something they weren't experiencing alone, in a vacuum. These kinds of doubts can be both a product of Satan's campaign against them and the logic of their own intelligence. It is this moment at the crossroads that people find themselves the most unsure, and it is at this moment that they are most imbued with the grace to make that leap of faith. God will be there. He will catch them. He will take their hand. He will give them salvation.
