She’s a dancer in the garden (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
And she dances with the flowers (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
In the early morning hours (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
When the wind shifts (Ooh-ooh)
And the fog drifts (Ooh-ooh)
She’s a dancer
She’s a dancer and she knows it (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
Everywhere she goes she shows it (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Condescending (Ooh-ooh)
Not pretending (Ooh-ooh)
No regretting (Ooh-ooh)
No forgetting (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
She’s a dancer
And on my early morning walks I often find her
I sit pretending that I’m looking at the paper
Oh
And when people stop to watch her (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)
She pretends she doesn’t see them (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Doesn’t need them (Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh)
And where she goes
There the wind blows (Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh)
Though it’s only with the flowers (Woo-ooh-ooh-ooh)
That she dances
And on my early morning walks I often find her
I sit pretending that I’m looking at the paper
And she dances with the flowers (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
In the early morning hours (Ooh-ooh ooh-ooh)

[Spoken]
This is a song about how people are very independent in their lives, how they don't need anyone, or they try not to need too many people. And, it's really a look at a person that, that lives in a world of their own. It's called She's A Dancer.
She's a dancer in the garden
And she dances with the flowers
In the early morning hours
When the wind shifts and the fog drifts

"This is a song about how people are very independent in their lives, how they don't need anyone, or they try not to need too many people. And, it's really a look at a person that, that lives in a world of their own."
"I loved dancing, I used to go to the park and dance. You know that song She’s A Dancer? That’s about me. I’m the dancer. When I was little I’d go down the Panhandle park; this was in San Francisco, this was actually two blocks away from Haight Ashbury. And the slum where I lived was on Lyon Street, across the other side of the park in the black section. I’d go down to the Panhandle park and I would just run around chasing the squirrels and picking up acorns and just twirling around and just enjoying being alone with, kids weren’t picking on me and stuff. And then I’d notice somebody was watching me and I’d get really embarrassed, and then I’d pretend I was just goofing around you know. So that’s what the song She’s A Dancer’s about. And on my early morning walks I often find, me, I was pretending that I was the adult sitting on the park bench, pretending to read the newspaper, but really I was watching the dancer. But really I was the dancer, and I was in conflict, you know. What was I going to do? I had my private life where I loved Christ and I didn’t think there was anything wrong with dancing around. And I didn’t think there was anything wrong with writing the songs that I was writing, but the church was disturbed. So there was the parental force in me that wanted to be accepted by the grown ups at my church. But then there was the child in me who knew, hey, I’m only ten years old, you know. What am I doing that’s so wrong? I’m just trying to understand what the bible says and be a christian. So that’s what the dancer is, it’s about a conflict, it’s about a schism in my religious life where I was trying to follow the Lord but instead I was trying to follow the church. And the church and God are not always going the same direction. We don’t usually see that until years later in hindsight. We you know, we feel bad about all the people we attacked as an early christian and told them you’re going to hell and you can’t have long hair and go to heaven, and unless you’re baptised you’re gonna go to hell. You know. If you’re a christian and you die an hour later you go to hell ‘cos you haven’t been baptised. All the things that we once believed in our first couple years of salvation, we later you know, wish we could go back and talk to all those people we offended and say I’m really sorry, I was wrong. Here’s what I’ve learned now. We wish that we could preach to them in love instead of legalism. That’s what the song is about, it’s about my emotional conflicts as an early christian."
