My dearest female friend was Cathy Stashuk. She was co-President of The People! Fan Club with Janet Litton. I drove my motorcycle down El Camino Real ("The King's Highway") to cover new ideas with Cathy. She was excited and told me she had heard a song she thought we could do really well. It was the B-Side of a Zombies‘ single called "I Love You." She asked me to do it as a favor so I took the song to the band. I arranged the harmonies, slowed the tempo down and we all worked very hard on the intro. We wanted it to be light and evocative. Light but "heavy" as we used to say, which meant impressive or substantive. We not only performed it every night but took it into the studio. We were very adventurous, given the fact that our recording budget had always been limited. l had played flute on "Riding High“ and on stage Geoff sometimes bowed a cello or a double-bass. We used a sitar and tablas. So in the studio we decided to use large tympani drums and padded mallets to the beginning of the song. In the harmony on the "chorus" section, there is a moment of variance in the phrase where we sing "Yes, I doooooo".
I did a single trill in one spot and Denny did a single trill just slightly off of my trill, giving it a very subtle moment of “tension and release”. He and I worked at home to get it just like we wanted it. (Denny had come to San Jose to get a medical degree. Precision was something he took pride in. On stage others might sing flat or fluff a note, but Denny and I were like lasers, cutting through the mistakes. Up to that point, I had never met a drummer who could sing as well.) The song was a world-wide success. It was on the radio “charts” in Israel, Italy, South America, the Scandinavian countries, Germany, Holland, the British countries, India, Greece, reaching even into Prague and other “remote” cities and countries. In most countries the song topped the charts. It was even number one in Japan. Twice. And a Japanese group covered our version and it reached number one for them, too.
