A child is waiting within watery walls
For some sweet signal from the angel's lips
And then sudden purpose shall arrive
Through sacred corridors and darkened halls
Through unions gate and past resistant hopes
To gasp in cold surprise and be alive

God says awake and know evil from good
Weave righteousness into submission's loom
Have faith in what flesh cannot comprehend
The road is straight and narrow through this world
But some shall stray and gather flowers of doom
And recognise the enemy for their friend

How foolish, sad, the enmity men keep between baptism and the final dirge
Embracing vain pursuits which barely please
But now I bid thee rest in unborn sleep to dream on airy trifles
And help purge this life's bleak horrors from future memories

Unborn Child is a poem I wrote several months before Michael was born. I wanted it to be special so I chose and abc / abc rhyme scheme instead of a more musical format like the traditional ab / cb rhyme structure. I read this poem several times in concert so it circulated in the bootlegger circles but I never printed out the poem for distribution or released a studio version of it until now
