Six Feet Of Chain
This is a cover of a song from Lee Hazlewood's album Trouble Is A Lonesome Town. Larry's brother Charles started recording a cover of the whole album around 2004, under the monicker Thriftstore Masterpiece. Larry recorded vocals for three of the tracks. This take was not used on the final album, with vocals by Pete Yorn being selected instead. Larry's take was initially only available on a late 2013 Solid Rock Army (fan club) release.
Version 1 is a full studio recording
|
Version 2 is the same recording as used for version 1, but with the narrated introduction intact
Note that the narration throughout the album was read by "Jerry the mailman", who was Larry and Charles' actual mailman for many years |
lyrics version 1
He can love any woman he sees
He can stay up as late as he please
He can take a nice walk in the rain
If he can do it on six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
He's a prisoner on six feet of chain
He can climb up a mountain so high
He can run, he can jump, he can fly
He can have plenty fortune and fame
If he can do it on six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
He's a prisoner on six feet of chain
He can go if he wants to go
He can stay if he wants to stay
He can go crazy or stay sane
But he must do it on six feet of chain
(It’s a long road to get there) [x9]
Six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
He's a prisoner on six feet of chain
He can stay up as late as he please
He can take a nice walk in the rain
If he can do it on six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
He's a prisoner on six feet of chain
He can climb up a mountain so high
He can run, he can jump, he can fly
He can have plenty fortune and fame
If he can do it on six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
He's a prisoner on six feet of chain
He can go if he wants to go
He can stay if he wants to stay
He can go crazy or stay sane
But he must do it on six feet of chain
(It’s a long road to get there) [x9]
Six feet of chain
Six feet of chain
He's a prisoner on six feet of chain
lyrics version 2
Aah ah ah ah ah [Continues throughout spoken introduction]
I don’t know whether you believe this or not, but we have two brothers in Trouble who are the thievinest, sneakinest, well just downright crookedest people you’d ever wanna meet. Now of course that might not be too hard to believe, but when Orvill and George Dobkins - that’s the two brothers - steal something, they don’t steal from none of us. They steal from each other. That’s right, they steal from each other, have each other arrested and put in jail. Now Orvill’s been in jail, well eh twelve times. And George, well George has been in eleven. In fact he’s still in. Now the other day I saw Orvill on the street and after we got through with our howdees I asked him how George was. He kinda smiled and scratched the hammer holder on his overalls and said he guessed he’s ok. Then I said you know Orvill, it seems an awful shame for you and your brother to be stealing from each other all the time, and having each other arrested and spending all that time in jail. You must feel kinda bad with your brother all locked up in jail and you out here free as a bird. Well Orvill kinda grinned and said, it ain’t so bad, he can do anything he wants to do. [Spoken]
