lyrics version 1
Mama tow my barge down to the sea
Give my belongings to the poor
Two shining eyes looking down at me
Feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Mama I can hear that thunder roll
Echoing down from God’s distant shore
I can hear him calling out to my soul
I feel like I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x4]
Mama wipe the tears from my face
I can’t see through them any more
Right now I feel so out of place
An' I feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x4]
Going down that last long road
I think about it more and more
And soon these chains will fall off me
An' then I’ll be knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x2]
Yeah, knock knock knocking on heaven's door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door
Mama wipe the blood from my brow
All my life has been a war
Soon I’ll be going far away
And I’ll be knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x6]
Like so many times before
A-knock knock knocking on heaven’s door
Give my belongings to the poor
Two shining eyes looking down at me
Feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Mama I can hear that thunder roll
Echoing down from God’s distant shore
I can hear him calling out to my soul
I feel like I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x4]
Mama wipe the tears from my face
I can’t see through them any more
Right now I feel so out of place
An' I feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x4]
Going down that last long road
I think about it more and more
And soon these chains will fall off me
An' then I’ll be knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x2]
Yeah, knock knock knocking on heaven's door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door
Mama wipe the blood from my brow
All my life has been a war
Soon I’ll be going far away
And I’ll be knocking on heaven’s door
Knock knock knocking on heaven's door [x6]
Like so many times before
A-knock knock knocking on heaven’s door
Another song which affected me, but in a very different way, was “Knocking On Heaven’s Door”. I had come across lyrics which were very different from the one’s Dylan had sung in the movie Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid. And then the song was no longer about a cowboy outlaw. It seemed to be more about a Civil War soldier, and provided a metaphor for all of our lives as we come toward the end of our existence through unexpected misfortune. It sounded almost Biblical in language. It is foreboding, confessional though perhaps more regretful than repentant. A very interesting look into one man’s soul as he moves toward Heaven.
