From The Hamlet segment.
In Hamlet, a group of thespians prepare to perform an extemporaneous performance of a story line Hamlet has suggested to them. They are very excited, and somewhat intimidated by the command performance to perform for the Royals in the court. So they do relaxation exercises, and one of the primary techniques for centering one's self is to breathe deeply and slowly. Breathing is very easy, almost automatic, so much so that most of us do not concentrate on it very efficiently and we are very often in a light stage of oxygen deprivation and hyperventilation without knowing it.
My mother's advice to me whenever she saw me backstage, just before a play, a musical or a concert performance was this: "Don't forget to take three deep breaths" before your first word, (or your first note). And I always have, especially when my congestive heart failure was so extreme.
