So, previously unplumbed new depths of slackerdom have been attained around here. Onlookers no doubt feel like there has been a four month hiatus in site activity - and that's pretty much what it looks like from the inside too. I've been doing other stuff, such as watching the movie Knives Out. If you're wondering why on earth I'm mentioning some random film here then I suggest you go watch it too. Not only is it a good film, kind of like a live enactment of the board game Cluedo, but there is a Larry Norman song in the soundtrack. And it's actually Larry, not some awful cover like was used in The Leftovers. Anyway, in the midst of all the nothingness, there have actually been some updates:

So. This planet is a somewhat different place to visit than it was three months ago. Progress around here has been a little slow, as I've been finding other things to occupy my time. As always though, there are some updates to report:
This entry continues the theme whereby not too much seems to happen around here anymore. The acquisitions department has been very active, causing the need for ever more digitising of vinyl and cassettes, which in turn causes the need for ever more double checking of lyrics and fade outs and so on.
Of course, none of that is visible to you, unless it leads to a note or a small lyrical update. But here is the effort since last time that you can see:
Short and sweet! (Or lazy and easily distracted......) I've been spending a lot of time transferring, listening to, scanning and photographing Larry's cassettes. The upshot is that whilst there may not be too much new around here for you to look at, there has been way more activity than is obvious. Like a swan. All calm and graceful on the surface, but under the water the feet are paddling away like there's no tomorrow.
Actually, that's an exaggeration. Maybe a sloth is a better comparison. Regardless, the fact is that there is new stuff for you to look at. You might even learn something you weren't aware of. I know I have!
I will sign off with an honest question..... Could a sloth have achieved all of the above in six weeks or so? I'm not convinced it could have. Maybe a lethargic badger is a better comparison. What's new? Well, I'll tell ya. I received a few surprises in the last month. For example, did you ever notice that the 2LP version of Home At Last sounds noticeably better than all the others, including the CDs? Or that Royal Music's The Best Of Larry Norman cassette is somehow far superior sound wise to every other format? Hot mixes!
So I've actually been working quite hard around here for the past month or so. If you struggle to believe me given past evidence then compare this update with the previous one! Hundreds of small fixes and improvements, together with a handful of very interesting additions.
Did you realise that Looking For The Footprints actually appeared on a Randy Stonehill album years before it appeared on one of Larry's own releases? Or that the Phydeaux version of the Stop This Flight LP differs aurally from the other versions?
This will be a contender for the most pointless Devblog in history, but if nothing else I need to make sure Google don't peg the site as having been completely abandoned. A combination of crashing computers, melting electrical sockets and slacker-tude have led to my pretty much taking a month off.
But, but, there is still some new stuff to report. Not much, but some....
Sorry, that's all. The next update will be more interesting, I promise. As long as there are no further mower and hard drive connector related incidents. So I've gone back to 1967 and am working my way forwards, yet again. Reason being that I realised often subtle differences between the various releases of the same LP had been overlooked. Other than a handful of small excursions outwith this chronological approach, I've been poring over matrix markings and spending hours digitising the same albums over and over, then listening closely with a pair of Grados.
Did you realise for example that Walking Backwards is slightly different on the UK release of Bootleg? Or that the UK release has a reversed stereo image? Or that some Verve/MGM releases of Planet have small differences? Or that the Rhema version of Garden has an earlier fade out on Baroquen Spirits? I've still to complete this exercise with In Another Land, but other than that everything up to and including 1980 has been done. As time consuming as all this is, it makes for a very short list of updates. It could be a huge list, but I'm too lazy to link to all the updated song pages.
What's new you ask? Well I'll tell ya, lots of little things...
So. I've diligently been creating album pages over the last six weeks or so. If I haven't inadvertently overlooked something, I think 'Home Box' is the only one still to be done. Do you have them all? If so go have a look - I'm confident you'll find something you didn't realise existed!
Once I was pretty much done with the album pages, I went all the way back to 1967 and started working forwards chronologically, which threw up a couple of omissions and version order errors. I've reached 1982 now, and will continue stepping forwards until I catch up to Live At The Mac again. Do you get the feeling I'm finding other things to do rather than tackle Mac lyrics?! Anyway, here's what's new:
One last thing. Charles has completed mixing of the multitrack tapes from the UK leg of the 1977 world tour, and says it will be the best live Larry album ever released. He is thinking of launching a Kickstarter campaign for it soon..... |
